Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim struck a very pessimistic tone after his side lost to Brentford on Sunday.

The Red Devils are in the midst of their worst season in Premier League history, languishing in 15th place with just a two-point cushion on 17th. Had the three newly-promoted outfits not been quite so out of their depth, Man Utd could have been in a genuine relegation battle this term.

Aided by a red card, Man Utd managed to comfortably beat Athletic Club in the first leg of their semi-final clash last week, which means that it would take an almighty collapse for the Premier League giants to miss out on an appearance in the final.

The club’s entire focus has been shifted to winning UEFA’s secondary competition, and this is reflected in their results in the Premier League. Man Utd are winless in six and were beaten 4-3 by Brentford on Sunday.

Amorim: Man Utd not ready for the Champions League

Speaking after the match, coach Amorim made several eyebrow-raising comments on the state of his side, which suggest that he has already given up on next season before it has even begun.

After being asked about Man Utd’s ‘short-cut’ into the Champions League via the Europa League, Amorim pessimistically insisted that the Red Devils are ‘not ready’ to compete in Europe’s elite competition.

“We are not ready to play in the Premier League, be competitive, and to be in the Champions League,” he said. “We know that, but we need to win, and we need to fight to win this competition, to give something to our fans, and to go to the Champions League.

“Then we will have time to prepare the team to cope with those two competitions. So, it is a dilemma, but we want to win, of course.”
