Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to be subject to last-ditch Liverpool talks as the Anfield clubs tries to take some consolation after England international revealed that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

Real Madrid are set to land the 26-year-old, whose decision to depart his boyhood club has sparked anger from the Reds supporters.

Real Madrid tried to sign Trent during the January transfer window but were put off by the Reds’ exorbitant demands, but they stand a far greater chance of success landing him in a special transfer window that FIFA has permitted at the beginning of June.

Of course, the Bernabeu side will sign Alexander-Arnold at a significant discount, with a €1.2 million fee expected to sign the player early. This would include both the player’s wages and also includes bonuses.

Carragher on Alexander-Arnold: I’m angry and disappointed

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed his disappointment that Alexander-Arnold is set to leave the club for Real Madrid, explaining just why there has been such an outpouring of anger towards the player.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ ‘Monday Night Football’, Carragher explained: “Liverpool players, local players, are held in a higher regard and supporters expect more of them. I don’t always agree with how these players are treated in certain situations.

“My thing with Trent is that I’m angry and disappointed that he doesn’t think Liverpool are good enough when they’re winning. Liverpool are in the best five or six teams in Europe.

“I never had teams of the calibre of Real Madrid asking for me, but I wouldn’t have done that.

“Real Madrid are a rival for Liverpool in the European Cup. They’re the biggest club in the world.

“But there’s part of me that loves to see Scousers do well. It’s amazing, he’s going to play for the biggest club in the world. But it’s a disappointment that Liverpool could have an era of domination and that’s not enough for him.”

Liverpool, it seems, might at least salvage a little money for Alexander-Arnold, but it will not be enough to heal the wounds left on Merseyside.

While Real Madrid may wish a sale, it may be difficult to manufacture given his large wages and chronic physical unreliability over the course of the last 18 months. Alaba would certainly represent a major gamble for any buying club.
