Vicario’s Rallying Cry: “Create History” Ahead of Europa League Final vs. Man United

Guglielmo Vicario has called on his Tottenham team-mates to make history in Bilbao and ensure the corridors of the club are decorated next season with images of them holding the Europa League trophy.

‘It would be massive for the players, for the staff and especially for the fans,’ said Vicario ahead of the final against Manchester United on Wednesday.

‘We know we can create history for this football club. We know that probably next year when we walk through the corridors into the dressing room, we will see some photos of us lifting that trophy, but now it is not certain.

‘So we have to keep working as best we can to try to arrive on the day as much ready as we can to create history.’

Tottenham are searching for their first trophy since 2008 and their first in Europe since 1984.

For Vicario, the final represents the chance of glory at the end of a difficult season in which he spent three months out with a broken ankle.

‘The injury has been a big deal for me,’ said the Italy international, signed from Empoli in 2023. ‘To live through this kind of moment and win a semi-final of a European competition to go into a final, it was a big aim for me to try to arrive in May and to have the opportunity to play this kind of game.

‘I cannot to be more proud of my journey until this point. Now it is just about trying to finalise the last step we have.’

Tottenham have beaten Manchester United three times this season, home and away in the Premier League and in the Carabao Cup. They have never trailed and have led for all but 31 minutes, but top scorer Brennan Johnson is guarding against complacency.

‘We know, going into the final, we can’t rely on the fact that we’ve beaten them a few times,’ said Johnson. ‘It’s about now coming up with a plan because each time we’ve beaten them has been down to different reasons.

‘We’ve done good work preparing for Man United so now it’s about coming up with how we want to win, things we want to do, things we want to stop them from doing. It’s a new opportunity.’

The Europa League has been a source of solace for Spurs during a season of crippling injuries and awful Premier League form.

‘It’s been a real positive drive for us,’ said Johnson. ‘When times have been tough and we’ve had to go to some tough places in Europe and we’ve got some really good results, it brings the squad together a massive amount.

‘The quarter-final and the semi-final, these games have been massive for us. Unbelievable victories, real togetherness. It just makes us stronger and more together.’
