Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been told to finalise a deal for AC Milan superstar Mike Maignan this summer.

The Blues have signed five different goalkeepers since the arrival of Clearlake Capital as their new owners in 2022, while Edouard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Robert Sanchez, Djordje Petrovic and Filip Jorgensen have all had spells as first-choice over the past few years.

However, ex-Chelsea and England goalkeeper Robert Green believes his former club should finalise a deal for Maignan in order to finally fix their issues in between the sticks.

Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation

Speaking to The Mirror ahead of Chelsea’s opening fixture of the 2025 Club World Cup, Green warned Maresca that he must trim down the options at his disposal.

“They’ve got a lot of goalkeepers,” Green said. “You look at Petrovic and others who weren’t even at the club this season. You have five who could be competing for the first team and that is too many in anyone’s squad. It needs clarification.

“If Mike Maignan comes in and you say that’s your number one, fine. It just needs that noise and unsettling nature of it to be nipped in the bud.

“Mike Maignan has excelled whether that be for club or country. He’s proven what he can do.

Green added: “Playing at Stamford Bridge is a very unsettling place. You see it when Sanchez or Jorgensen are playing, you see it on them, especially with the way they’re playing has really forced them into a position of needing a goalkeeper to take on a role of huge responsibility…

“I think signing him [Maignan] could prove to be the answer.”
