Manchester United could launch a shock move for one of Ruben Amorim’s former favourites who left the Premier League for big money last summer.

United are looking at creative ways to strengthen multiple areas in their squad, with their failure to secure Champions League football for next season leaving them with limited resources to address all their squad issues.

Matheus Cunha has already joined United for €74 million, while a bid of €70m for Bryan Mbeumo has been rejected by Brentford, although an improved offer is expected which would deplete the transfer budget available to Amorim.

Bayern paid Fulham €51m for Palhinha last summer but the 29-year-old made just six Bundesliga starts and he is believed to have held talks with the German side over his future

United are hoping that Bayern are open to a loan move for Palhinha and are ‘watching with intent’ to make their move in such a case, although early indications suggest that the midfielder may only be allowed to depart permanently for a fee in excess of €35m.

United

United are said to be long-term fans of Palhinha since his time at Fulham and they are ‘eager’ to learn his fate, with the Portuguese international also having played under Amorim at Sporting and ‘seamlessly’ fitting his style of play.

A loan move is thought to suit both United, who have accepted that they cannot afford a move for top target Ederson of Atalanta, as well as Palhinha, who is said to be ‘determined’ to make a success of his move to Bayern.

However, United could face competition from Palhinha’s former club Fulham if he does become available, while Bayern have no incentive to take a lowball offer for the midfielder with three years remaining on his contract.

Bayern’s stance over a temporary move will become clear in the coming weeks and they may give Palhinha the opportunity to recapture his best form on loan, meaning United will continue to monitor the situation while also aiming to raise funds for further investment.
