Southampton have rejected an approach from Leeds United to take Cameron Archer on loan.

The 23-year old has a number of clubs interested including Sunderland but Southampton want him to stay after loaning Ben Brereton Diaz to Sheffield United.

Striker has been the priority position for Leeds for this window and they have been struggling to find a deal that fits under the PSR restrictions.

Talks may continue as they run out of options and the window draws to a close.

Archer has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Southampton this season, scoring five times.

Only two of his goals have come in the Premier League this campaign for rock bottom Southampton.

Archer joined Southampton in the summer in a ÂŁ15million move from Aston Villa, signing a four-year deal.

The forward had rejoined Aston Villa earlier in the window after the club activated a buy-back clause to bring him back from Sheffield United.

Archer had scored four goals in 32 appearances for the Blades last season following a permanent move for an £18m fee.

The Aston Villa academy graduate has previously had loan spells at Solihull Moors, Preston and Middlesbrough.

Leeds are currently in the market for a forward despite being the top scorers in the Championship with 53 goals from 29 matches.

Daniel Farke’s side are currently top of the table, two points clear of second placed Sheffield United.

Third placed Burnley are three points behind Leeds in a tight race for the two automatic promotion spots.
