Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and opted to bowl first against New Zealand in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Stadium in Karachi.
Team changes: Pakistan and New Zealand
Both teams have made one change from their last encounter, which took place just a week ago in the final of the Tri-Nation Series. In that match, New Zealand emerged victorious, defeating Pakistan to claim the title. For Pakistan, Haris Rauf replaces Faheem Ashraf, adding extra firepower to their pace attack. On the other hand, New Zealand has brought in Matt Henry in place of Jacob Duffy.
However, the Blackcaps have suffered a major setback, as their all-rounder Rachin Ravindra has been left out of the playing XI. While captain Mitchell Santner did not provide a specific reason for his absence, it is believed to be linked to an injury concern. Rachin Ravindra’s absence from the playing XI may be a precautionary measure following the head injury he sustained during New Zealand’s opening match against Pakistan in the Tri-Nation Series.

Reason behind Rachin Ravindra’s absence
Ravindra had suffered a head injury during the Tri-Series against Pakistan when he attempted to take a catch at deep mid-wicket. While fielding, he lost sight of the ball at the last moment, leading to an awkward attempt that resulted in the ball striking his forehead instead of settling in his hands.
The impact left him visibly shaken, and medical staff were called onto the field to assess his condition. Though he was able to walk off on his own, subsequent examinations revealed concussion symptoms. As a precaution, the New Zealand team management decided to rest him for the remainder of the Tri-Series, prioritizing his long-term fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy.
While New Zealand has not officially confirmed whether his absence from this crucial opening game is due to the same issue, it is highly likely that he is still recovering from the effects of the blow. His absence could be a major concern for the Kiwis, as he has been one of their most consistent top-order batters, especially in subcontinent conditions.
