Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has admitted that his squad are “upset” amid growing rumours that he could be sacked before the end of the season.

The Blues have only picked up two wins in their last nine Premier League matches and they have dropped to sixth place in the table following a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.

Maresca has been tentatively linked with the Stamford Bridge exit door in recent weeks, but he has issued a fighting message as he looks to rescue Chelsea’s season.

“The team in this moment has to be upset. We are upset. We are not happy with the results in this moment,” Maresca told reporters ahead of his side’s clash against Aston Villa on Saturday.

He added: “I’m not here to survive. I’m here to win games and bring this club to fight for titles.

“The problem is, when you win games, you look humble. When you don’t win games, you look like [you have] a lack of ambition.

“Since day one, my intention is to win games, to win titles and to bring this club where this club deserves to be. I’ve said this since day one. I’m ambitious and the club is ambitious.”

Maresca continued: “We have the same manager, same players and same sporting directors as two months ago when we were second in the league. The only thing that changed is unfortunately we are dealing with many injuries and this has affected the level of the team.”

Enzo Maresca is safe at Chelsea

Maresca’s comments come after he was publicly backed by Chelsea director Jonathan Goldstein, despite the club’s poor run of results.

Goldstein told Bloomberg TV: “He’s doing a great job. Chelsea started the season very well. The last six weeks have been, you know, finding their feet a little bit more.

“But Enzo has clearly done a great job in bringing the team together, bringing the talent through. We’re very optimistic for the rest of the season in how that plays out.”

When asked if Maresca will keep his job until the end of the campaign, Goldstein replied: “100%.”
