Cole Palmer inspired Chelsea to a historic 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday night as the Blues became the first winners of the new-look FIFA Club World Cup.

Enzo Maresca’s side went into the showpiece final at the MetLife Stadium as severe underdogs, but they produced a stunning tactical display to etch their name into the history books.

The England international opened the scoring with a well-placed shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 22nd minute, following impressive work from Malo Gusto, before adding a second with an identical shot eight minutes later after gliding past Vitinha with a fantastic dummy.

He then set up Pedro to make it 3-0, with the Brazilian dinking the ball over Donnarumma to give Chelsea a commanding half-time lead.

PSG improved after the break, but they were unable to find a way past an inspired Robert Sanchez, who earned the Golden Glove award thanks to a series of stunning saves in the final.

PSG soon lost their cool and Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair in the 85th minute, while ugly post-match scenes saw Luis Enrique appear to strike the aforementioned Pedro in the face.

It was arguably Chelsea’s best performance of the Maresca era and any doubts over their controversial transfer policy have certainly been quashed for now.
