PLAYER RATINGS: Rangers 0 Fenerbahce 2 (3-3 on aggregate. AET; Rangers win 3-2 on penalties): Who was the shoot-out hero for Rangers and the luckless star for Mourinho's men?

Jose Mourinho almost produced a stunning comeback but Rangers showed tremendous character to see off Fenerbahce in a penalty shoot-out after a tense night in Glasgow.

Who impressed and disappointed for the jittery hosts? Who took the second leg by the scruff of the neck for the Turkish outfit? Here are the match ratings from a dramatic night at Ibrox…

RANGERS (3-4-2-1)

JACK BUTLAND: 7.5 – No chance with either goals. Commanded his box well. Good save from Dzeko in extra-time. Two big saves in the shoot-out.

JAMES TAVERNIER: 6.5 – Unlucky with deflections for both goals. Made a goal saving intervention in stoppage-time and extra-time. Scored penalty.

JOHN SOUTTAR: 7 – Had plenty of important defending to do after half-time when Rangers dropped deep. Rock-solid in his own box. Booked.

LEON BALOGUN: 4.5 – Not as assured as he was when subbed on in Istanbul midway through the first half. Rather sold himself for the second. Booked.

DUJON STERLING: 5.5 – Versatile operator but was not entirely comfortable in the right wing-back role and did not get forward often. Booked.

NICOLAS RASKIN: 7 – Pressed Fred and Amrabat very well in the first half. Seemed to drop too deep in the second period but worked his socks off.

CONNOR BARRON: 7 – Dominant presence in the first half. A bit ragged after the break but kept the energy level highs. One of the best performers.

JEFTE: 4.5 – Got away with foul on Talisca that referee deemed a dive. Shocking mistake to gift the visitors a second goal.

VACLAV CERNY: 7 – Two-goal hero of the first leg was once again the main creative spark and attacking threat. Emphatic penalty.

MOHAMED DIOMANDE: 6 – Failed to pick out the correct passes in the final third. Made a vital tackle in the box in the second half and worked hard. Booked.

CYRIEL DESSERS: 6 – His physicality troubled the Fenerbahce backline and won fouls to get up the park. Had precious few sniffs at goal. Booked.

SUBSTITUTIONS: Yilmaz (Sterling 56), Igamane (Dessers 68), Bajrami (Diomande 68), Jefte (Hagi 85). Lawrence (Barron 95). Booked: Yilmaz.

MANAGER – BARRY FERGUSON: 5 – His side lost their way after conceding. Regained poise in the end to squeeze through.

FENERBAHCE (4-4-2)

IRFAN EGRIBAYAT: 7 – Almost let a backpass run over the goal-line in the first half. Good stop to deny Igamane and then thwarted Cerny.

MERT MULDUR: 8 – Beat Jefte to the ball and glided past him to set up the second ball. Was a constant threat down the right side.

MILAN SKRINIAR: 6.5 – Struggled to handle the strength of Dessers. Not much else bothered him on a night when Rangers lacked threat.

YUSUF AKCICEK: 6.5 – Teenager was a far steadier presence than the more experienced Skriniar. Iffy distribution from the back.

FILIP KOSTIC: 8 – Reliable operator on the left flank. Caused Sterling and Tavernier problems. Just like Muldur, pinned the hosts back.

BRIGHT OSAYI-SAMUEL: 5 – Went down easily and far too cheaply at times. Had pace to burn but final product was sorely lacking.

SOFYAN AMRABAT: 7 – Endured a torrid time at Old Trafford but impressed with his range of passing. His work off the ball wasn’t as impressive.

FRED: 6.5 – Mainly toiled in five-year spell at Manchester United. Sluggish in the first period. Sharper after half-time. Saw penalty saved.

SEBASTIAN SZYMANSKI: 9 – Stunning volley before the break hauled Fenerbahce back into the tie. Poked home the second. Game-changer. Man of the match.

ANDERSON TALISCA: 7 – Wrongly booked for diving on the edge of the box. Direct style caused Rangers issues and almost grabbed a goal.

YOUSSEF EN-NESYRI: 6: – Had one tricky volley that went wide. Did okay but Souttar handled his physical threat reasonably comfortably.

SUBSTITUTES: Tadic (Osayi-Samuel 75), Dzeko (Talisca 75), Dijku (Muldur 88), Kahveci (En-Nesyri 106), Yandas (Szymanski 106). Booked: Dijku, Kahveci.

MANAGER – JOSE MOURINHO: 7 – Goal out of the blue got his side going. The Special One almost pulled off the comeback.

REFEREE: ESPEN ESKAAS (Norway) 5. ATTENDANCE: 50,061.
