The 19-year-old is joining the Blues after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising talents. Hato became a regular starter and occasional captain at just 17 and will now ply his trade at Stamford Bridge.

The versatile defender has signed a contract until 2032 with the option for a further season and will provide cover at centre-back and left-back. However, the fee Chelsea will pay for the Dutchman has been the subject of some debate.

A guaranteed figure of €43 million has been touted, but The Transfers Podcast host Duncan Castles understands that the Blues will actually pay slightly more. Despite this, the signing of Hato looks like an absolute steal in the grand scheme of things.

How much will Chelsea pay for Hato?

Speaking on the latest episode of The Transfers Podcast, Castles revealed that Chelsea will pay a fixed sum worth €46.5m and potential further bonuses in the future.

This is great business by the West London club as Ajax headed into this summer transfer window demanding in excess of €60m for their wonderkid defender.

“The guaranteed fee that Ajax will receive, which I understand is going to be €46.5m with variable payments on top, looks like one that’s gone in Chelsea’s favour,” Castles explained.

“My understanding is that Ajax could have received more than that if they had sold to another Premier League club last summer. And certainly the target figure that Ajax went into this summer as a valuation on Hato was over €60m.

“If Chelsea can develop the player in the right fashion, and he certainly fills a gap they have at the rear end of their team, it looks like this is a clever bit of transfer business by Chelsea.”
