Bayer Leverkusen CEO reveals the German club have a gentleman's agreement to let Xabi Alonso leave on one condition amid Real Madrid links

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has revealed that the German club would allow Xabi Alonso to leave on one condition.

Alonso has received much praise for the work that he has done at Leverkusen since taking charge in 2022.

Last season Alonso guided Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title without losing a game, while they also won the DFB-Pokal and reached the Europa League final.

This campaign Leverkusen are currently eight points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich but Alonso is seen as having a very bright future as a manager.

Alonso has been heavily linked with the managerial position at Real Madrid amid uncertainty over Carlo Ancelotti.

Leverkusen have hinted that Alonso would be allowed to leave if an approach was made.

Carro indicated that Alonso would be permitted to depart if he was contacted by a club that he played for, such as Real.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Carro said: ‘We have a gentleman’s agreement with Xabi Alonso for his exit’.

‘If a team in which Xabi Alonso has played comes, we would sit down to talk and we would NOT prevent him’.

As well as Real Madrid, Alonso also represented Real Sociedad and Liverpool during his playing career.

Alonso also commenced his managerial career at Real Sociedad before linking up with Leverkusen.

As well as Alonso, Real have also considered alternative potential appointments ahead of the Club World Cup, such as club legend Raul or another former player in Santiago Solari on an interim basis.

Alonso boasts an impressive record in charge of Leverkusen, having won 28 of his 46 matches in charge so far.

He has a strong connection with Real and coached the club’s Under-14 side while completing the UEFA Elite coaching course.
