INCOMING Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has detailed his thorough check of the club before agreeing to become the new manager.

Ten Hag will take over the reins at Old Trafford from this summer, coming fresh from a third league title in a row with Ajax.

Speaking to Dutch outlet VI, Ten Hag said: “‘Despite it being a beautiful club, I would never just start.

“I know United went through a very precise procedure. They’d done scouting, analyses, data, interviews with people who worked with me.

“Then we held multiple interviews. They didn’t rush into things. And neither did I.”

While Ten Hag has once again tasted success with Ajax, United’s season quickly unravelled into a disaster.

Despite the additions of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, and Cristiano Ronaldo and pre-season predictions of winning the title, United currently find themselves down in sixth place.

This is further compounded by United teetering on the edge of Europa League qualification, with West Ham three points behind with a game in hand and a superior goal difference.

Finishing seventh would mean Ronaldo and Co will face the ignominy of playing in the Europa Conference League next season.

Ten Hag is the man who will be responsible for overseeing a major rebuild of the playing squad.

Up to 10 departures expected to happen this summer alone, while Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong appears to be Ten Hag’s top transfer target.

On the challenge of the rebuild which awaits, Ten Hag said: “It felt like a difficult, but fantastic challenge.

“At United, there’s something to build and something to win. Manchester United is such a big name in the history of football.”
