Antonio Conte has admitted he fears he could be sacked by Tottenham Hotspur even before the end of the season, following their woeful Champions League exit.
The Italian manager has been under pressure since his appointment in November 2019, with Spurs having failed to make any significant progress in the Premier League or Europe.
The latest setback came on Wednesday night, when Spurs were knocked out of the Champions League by RB Leipzig, losing 3-0 on aggregate.
Speaking after the game, Conte said he was worried that he could be dismissed before the end of the season.
“I am worried about my future,” he said. “I know that the club can decide to sack me even before the end of the season. I am worried about this.”
Conte’s comments come after a difficult few months for Spurs, who have failed to make any real progress in the Premier League or Europe.
The club currently sits seventh in the league, and is in danger of missing out on a Champions League spot for next season.
In Europe, Spurs have been knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the third consecutive season, and have failed to make it past the group stage of the Europa League in the last two campaigns.
The club’s poor form has led to speculation that Conte could be sacked before the end of the season, with former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho being linked with the job.
However, Conte insists he is still the right man for the job, and believes he can turn things around at Spurs.
“I am the right man for this job,” he said. “I have the experience and the knowledge to turn this around. I am confident that I can do it.”
Conte’s future at Spurs remains uncertain, but one thing is for sure: the Italian manager is under immense pressure to turn things around at the club.
Only time will tell if he can do it, but for now, Conte is worried that he could be sacked before the end of the season.
