Arsenal are considering Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon after cooling their interest in Nico Williams, according to a report.

The Gunners look set to miss out on their top left-wing target as Athletic Club star Nico Williams has decided to pursue a move to Barcelona. While a difficult deal given the finances involved, the Blaugrana are poised to sign the Spain star after missing out on him last year.

This has forced Arsenal to look elsewhere, with the North London club still desperate to bolster the left flank. Several names are being considered, among them Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo and Newcastle attacker Anthony Gordon.

According to Ben Jacobs, Arsenal registered their interest in Rodrygo in May, but it is understood that he will be very expensive. Real Madrid would demand at least €90 million should he decide to agitate for a move.

So far, however, he has shown no inclination to demand a transfer. This could yet change if new head coach Xabi Alonso fails to give him assurances of regular starting opportunities, but Rodrygo is generally happy at Real Madrid.

Arsenal to chase Gordon?

This could make Gordon one of the more attainable targets for the Gunners, although he won’t be easy to get either. The England international signed a new long-term contract only last year.

The Athletic confirms that Gordon is admired by the Arsenal hierarchy, but Newcastle are said to be ‘confident’ that they can fend off interest in their key players, including the 24-year-old.

The Magpies managed to qualify for the Champions League and, after a few windows of frugal spending, believe that there is no need for them to cash in on key assets as they are no longer at risk of breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Last summer, Gordon was accused of having his head turned when Liverpool, whom he supported as a child, came calling. It remains to be seen if a move to Arsenal would hold the same appeal for a player who seems settled at St. James’ Park.
