Atletico Madrid star in 'advanced talks' to join Sunderland with newly-promoted side expected to beat two Premier League rivals to his signature

Sunderland are said to be closing in on the signature of Atletico Madrid star Reinildo Isnard Mandava.

The left back, widely known mononymously as Reinildo, has also been linked with interest from Leeds and Crystal Palace this summer.

According to The Sun, discussions with Palace have taken place but the 31-year-old is now in advanced talks with Sunderland and an agreement over a two-year contract is likely imminent.

Reinildo has spent three and a half seasons with Atleti, after joining the Madrid outfit from Lille in January 2022.

He has made 103 appearances under Diego Simeone but his contract is due to expire next week.

That should allow Sunderland to sign him on a free transfer.

Reinildo looks set to become Sunderland’s second major signing since their victory in last season’s Championship play-off final.

French midfielder Enzo Le Fee, who had been on loan at the Stadium of Light last season, moved permanently from Roma for a fee in the region of £19million after Sunderland’s promotion triggered an automatic purchase clause.

Meanwhile, Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson have both left Sunderland since the end of last season.

Reinildo featured for Atletico at this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.

Atletico failed to progress beyond the group stage despite winning two of their three matches, after a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain damaged their goal difference.

Reinildo was previously part of the Lille squad that pipped PSG to the Ligue 1 title in 2021.

He has also been capped 49 times by Mozambique since making his senior international debut in 2013.
