Bayern Munich are unlikely to trigger Joao Cancelo’s £60m permanent transfer option from Manchester City, as the Portuguese full-back’s loan spell in England gets worse.

Cancelo joined Bayern on loan from City in the summer, but has failed to make an impact in the Bundesliga. The 25-year-old has made just four appearances for the German champions, and has been an unused substitute in their last three matches.

The Portuguese international has been linked with a move away from Bayern in the January transfer window, with reports suggesting that he could return to City. However, it appears that Bayern are unlikely to trigger the £60m permanent transfer option in his loan deal.

Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has admitted that the club are not planning to make the move permanent. “We have a loan agreement with Manchester City and we will stick to it,” he said. “We are not planning to make the transfer permanent.”

Cancelo’s lack of playing time at Bayern has been a source of frustration for the player, who was hoping to make an impact in the Bundesliga. He has been linked with a move to AC Milan, but it appears that the Italian club are not interested in signing him.

Cancelo’s situation at City has not been helped by the emergence of youngster Phil Foden, who has been a regular in Pep Guardiola’s side this season. The 19-year-old has been impressive in the Premier League, and has been tipped to become one of the best players in the world.

Cancelo’s future at City is uncertain, and it appears that he will have to wait until the summer to find out where he will be playing next season. The Portuguese international is unlikely to be at Bayern, and it remains to be seen if he will be able to revive his career at City or elsewhere.
