David Beckham has been given a major boost in his pursuit of signing Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi after the MLS commissioner promised to make an incredible gesture if the Argentine joins Inter Miami.
Beckham has been trying to lure Messi to the United States for some time, and the MLS chief has now revealed that he would be willing to make a special offer to the 33-year-old if he decides to move to the Florida-based club.
Speaking to ESPN, MLS commissioner Don Garber said: “If Messi were to come to MLS, and if he were to come to Inter Miami, we would do something that would be very special.
“We would make sure that we would create a platform for him that would be something that no other player in our league has ever experienced.”
Garber’s comments come after Beckham revealed that he had held talks with Messi about a potential move to Inter Miami.
The former England captain said: “I’ve spoken to him and I know he’s excited about the project. He knows how passionate I am about it and he knows how much I want him to be a part of it.
“I’m not going to put any pressure on him. He’s a great player and he’s got to make the decision that’s right for him and his family. But I’m very hopeful that he’ll be a part of this project.”
Messi is out of contract at Barcelona at the end of the season and has been linked with a move away from the club.
Inter Miami are one of the clubs that have been linked with the Argentine, and Beckham’s latest comments suggest that he is confident of being able to convince Messi to join the MLS side.
Garber’s promise to make a special offer to Messi if he joins Inter Miami could be the deciding factor in the race to sign the Barcelona star.
The MLS chief’s comments suggest that the league is willing to go the extra mile to make sure that Messi is given the best possible platform to showcase his talents in the United States.
It remains to be seen whether Messi will decide to move to Inter Miami, but Beckham and Garber’s comments suggest that the MLS side are in with a good chance of signing the Argentine.
