Rangers have held talks with ex-Feyenoord boss Brian Priske about the managerial vacancy at Ibrox.
Priske is among a number of names under consideration, along with Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti.
Russell Martin had also been sounded out but he is now expected to join Leicester City over the coming days.
A 48-year-old Dane who had previous spells with FC Midtjylland, Royal Antwerp and Sparta Prague, Priske was most recently in charge of Feyenoord.
He won 17 of his 33 games in charge in Rotterdam before being replaced by club legend Robin van Persie back in February.
Priske led his team to a 3-3 draw away at Manchester City in the Champions League last November, a game which had seen Feyenoord come back from 3-0 down.

Steven Gerrard is also in the running as Rangers enter the final stages of the process
The Dutch side also beat Bayern Munich 3-0 under Priske’s watch, just a few weeks before he was dismissed for ‘inconsistent results and a lack of chemistry’.
Reports emerged in Spain over the weekend which claimed that Ancelotti is also firmly back in contention for the Rangers job.
Rangers are expected to step up their search for a new manager over the coming days and the recruitment process is now thought to be in the final stages, with new sporting director Kevin Thelwell free to take up his duties at Ibrox following the conclusion of the English Premier League season this afternoon.
Rangers will ideally look to formally present Thelwell alongside the new manager, with chief executive Patrick Stewart and Gretar Steinsson of 49ers Enterprises also handling the recruitment process.
Meanwhile, Martin is expected to take charge of relegated Leicester City over the coming days following the dismissal of Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Speaking to Sky Sports during Saturday’s Championship play-off final between Sheffield United and Sunderland, he said: ‘I’ve enjoyed the break.
‘It’s been a great time to reflect and take stock, but yes, I hope to be back in a dugout at some point soon.’
