Bruno Fernandes could be a high-profile casualty of Manchester United’s failure to win the Europa League, with the Portugal international star admitting that he could depart the club following defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.

A single goal from Brennan Johnson settled the final, with the Red Devils disappointing in terms of their attacking output in the clash.

Bruno, for once, was unable to inspire his side and, amid rumours that he could leave for Al-Hilal, confessed that he is open to leaving if the club believes a sale is for the best.

“I have always been honest. I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” he said.

“I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club the great days. In the day that the club thinks that I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it. But I’ve always said it and I keep my word in the same way.

“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it’s what it is, and football sometimes is like this.”

FootballTransfers previously revealed in an exclusive update that Man Utd are following Athletic Club’s Oihan Sancet as a replacement for Bruno Fernandes.

Will Man Utd sell Bruno Fernandes?

Had Man Utd beaten Spurs and sealed a return to the Champions League, selling Bruno would have been unthinkable. But with no European football to look forward to next season and a difficult financial position due to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the possibility that leading stars could depart is very real.

Al-Hilal are likely to be willing to pay an above-market rate to sign Fernandes, both in terms of his transfer fee and his wage. As such, a transfer could be attractive for all parties.

Such a move would doubtless throw into question the ambition of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s project at Old Trafford, yet sales are likely to be required to make the type of calibre signing that United need to return the club to its best.

Man Utd face a very difficult reality after losing the Europa League final, and selling star man Bruno Fernandes would be a stark reminder of this for all at the Red Devils.
