Jamie Carragher has given his backing to Manchester United’s first major move of the summer, describing Matheus Cunha as a ‘great signing’ for the club.
The former Liverpool defender was speaking on Sky Sports following reports in Brazil claiming that United had agreed a £62.5million deal to sign the Wolves forward, who has scored 17 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions this season.
‘I think it’s a great signing. I think he’s a brilliant player,’ Carragher said. ‘I love watching him play. We are going to pick our Team of the Season tonight, but he was in my team at the halfway point of the season. He had a great start to the season.
‘I watched him at Man City a few weeks ago and he looked really sharp, quick. We know how the manager at Manchester United wants to play. He likes two sort of No 10s in his team and I think he’s fit perfectly.’
The Brazilian appears poised to become Ruben Amorim’s first summer signing as United boss, following Patrick Dorgu to Old Trafford after the Danish left back arrived from Lecce in February.
Amorim is known to be a big admirer of Cunha, whose release clause at Wolves has reportedly been triggered after weeks of speculation. The pair were seen in conversation in the tunnel at Old Trafford after United’s 1-0 home defeat by Wolves last month.

While excitement builds over Cunha’s expected arrival, Carragher admitted the move could spell trouble for Alejandro Garnacho. The 19-year-old winger has featured in 36 of United’s 37 Premier League games this season but may now find his place under threat.
Carragher added: ‘It’s certainly not good news [for Garnacho], because I think Amad [Diallo] might play in one of those positions alongside Cunha, or maybe Bruno Fernandes at different times.
‘There is a lot of talk about Garnacho moving on because he’s come through the academy system, and you know what that means for the PSR of the club – and we also know Man United have got a few problems with that issue right now.
‘So I think if a decent offer comes in for Garnacho then I think Man United probably will take that.’
