UFC fans are left stunned by fighter’s post-bout actions at Fight Night 252 – as security is forced to step in to prevent the incident escalating further

UFC fans were left stunned by Nikolay Veretennikov’s actions following his defeat by Austin Vanderford at UFC Fight Night 252 on Saturday.

Vanderford earned a second-round technical knockout in Seattle at the event, taking the fight on four days’ notice and claiming the 13th win of his MMA career with the stoppage.

It was a big moment for the American, but his opponent didn’t want to go down with a – literal – fight, jumping up following the stoppage.

He then approach his opponent and, instead of showing respect as is often the case, shoved Vanderford in the back, causing for security to pile in.

Vanderford had been celebrating his victory, punching the air as he looked out into the crowd. Veretennikov walked with his hands on his hips, before seeming to take issue with what was going on.

He then pointed at his opponent, approached him, and pushed him in the back. He received a shove back, before the duo were separated.

Fans flocked to social media to slam the star, with one posting on X: ‘Nikolay Veretennikov landed his biggest shot on Austin Vanderford after the fight lol.’

Others called for the fighter to lose his job. One posted: ‘Hopefully the UFC immediately cuts him. You don’t do that s*** after the ref calls.’

Another added: ‘Good way to get fired.’

Veretennikov, in his career, enjoyed success in Fury FC and UFL but has struggled since moving to UFC.

In total, he has 12 wins and six defeats to his name.

UFC fans furiously boo controversial decision after bizarre finish to Fight Night main event in Seattle

The furious Seattle crowd booed mercilessly after the first UFC event in The Emerald City since 2013 ended controversially.

On Saturday night, the UFC Fight Night main event between rising star Song Yadong and Henry Cejudo came to a bizarre ending after an accidental eye poke in the third round.

After Yadong’s fingers pierced through his left eye, referee Jason Herzog gave Cejudo the obligatory five-minute timeout. The boos began to rain down the Octagon when the former two-division champion decided to maximize the pause.

Despite the clear discomfort, Cejudo survived through the buzzer before calling for his corner to summon the doctor between rounds.

‘I can’t f****** see,’ Cejudo told his coaches. ‘I don’t know what the f*** he’s throwing at me.’

Concluding that Cejudo couldn’t continue into the final rounds, Herzog started the fourth before calling the doctor into the cage and waiving the bout off.

UFC fans in Seattle were furious after a controversial decision ended the night’s main event

‘More than half of the scheduled rounds have been completed, so we go to the scorecards,’ the referee explained to in-cage announcer Bruce Buffer as fans continued to boo.

Herzog also explained to Song’s corner that he ‘either loses this from an incidental foul or I go to the scorecards.’

As a result, Song was given the technical decision with the scores 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27. Despite scoring the biggest victory of his career, Kung Fu Kid brushed off the legitimacy of the win.

‘Sorry that was totally an accident,’ Song addressed the displeased audience. ‘That is not the result I wanted. I am sorry, Henry. He’s a legend, we should run it back. We will fight again. Sorry fans.’

Cejudo, rumored to be retiring after Saturday’s main event, was just as adamant about a rematch as his opponent.

‘We’re about to be brothers, Bisping,’ he joked at commentator Michael Bisping, who lost sight in his right eye during his legendary fight career.

‘I couldn’t see out of my left,’ Cejudo continued. ‘My right’s okay. But even that last minute, when he was chasing me, I didn’t know what he was throwing at me.’

‘I wanted to continue, but if I couldn’t see, he’s just gonna hurt me,’ he added. ‘Of course, we can run it back but that f****** finger went in my eye pretty good.’

It was later revealed by the broadcast crew that the fight would have resulted in a no-contest if Cejudo decided to forfeit during the timeout. Nonetheless, the future hall-of-famer took his third straight loss and fifth in his illustrious career.

On the other hand, Song went back to the win column after his loss to Petr Yan in March 2024. The 27-year-old holds a 22-8-1 record in MMA and 11-3-1 in the UFC.

The bitter ending to UFC Seattle came after the prelims spoiled the fans with five knockouts and two submissions, giving the judges an easy night in the office.

Meanwhile, the main card had one knockout and four decisions, including Song’s unfortunate victory.

The action-packed preliminary card at UFC Fight Night 252 in Seattle hosted one of the nastiest knockouts so far in 2025.

In a bantamweight prelim on Saturday night at Climate Pledge Arena, Ricky Simone brutally slept Javid Basharat in the opening round.

During an exchange, Simon landed an overhand right that put Basharat’s lights out as he collapsed onto the canvas.

However, Simon put the fight to bed, landing a powerful right hammer fist for good measure before referee Mike Beltran stepped in and stopped the fight.

Upon the stoppage, Basaharat lay motionless on the mat, with his eyes glaring wide toward the ceiling.

The knockout sent fans into a frenzy on social media as the event enjoyed a 100% finish rate through the prelims.

A fourth user noted ‘Nice work from the ref,’ about Beltran’s timely stoppage.

Simon snapped a three-fight skid with what was a must-win performance.

On the other hand, Basharat fell into his second straight loss and was knocked out for the first time in his career.

The fight moved Simon to a 21-6 record while Basharat dropped to 14-2. Simon is likely to win a $50k knockout bonus as fans already labelled his finish as a Knockout of the Year candidate.

Dana White drops tease over the biggest fight in UFC history and insists it’s ‘coming’ despite claim he could strip fighter of belt as talks drag on

Dana White has insisted the biggest fight in UFC history is coming despite negotiations rumbling on, telling concerned doubters to ‘relax’.

Jon Jones v Tom Aspinall is in the pipeline for the promotion and the historic heavyweight title unification bout between the undisputed and interim champions could even take place this year, with White fronting lengthy talks.

Discussions over the showdown began after Jones retained his belt following his explosive third-round knockout of Stipe Miocic in November.

Aspinall, who defended his interim title against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 in July, agreed the bout would be the ‘biggest heavyweight fight ever’.

However, viewers have begun to rubbish claims that the fight will be held with no agreement reached, forcing White to attempt to play down their concerns.

Speaking on an Instagram Live, White addressed one comment declaring they were ‘not getting’ the blockbuster match-up, replying: ‘Yes you will. It’s coming. Relax.’

Aspinall agreed the showdown with Jones would be the ‘biggest heavyweight fight ever’

The update came just weeks after he suggested he will contemplate stripping Jones of his belt should negotiations continue to drag on until the summer.

Asked if he could take the drastic measure, White told The MacLife: ‘100 per cent. If we don’t get the fight done, we move on, and we make another fight.

‘But not last night, but the night before, I was up in my room with my people until like 6 in the morning. We’re working on lots of stuff right now.

‘There’s lots of really good s**t going on right now.’

Jones has demanded ‘f*** you’ money to take on Aspinall but White has admitted the onus is on the UFC to meet his demands to broker the ‘biggest fight’ in their history.

‘There’s no situation,’ said White. ‘It’s the biggest fight we can make.

‘I know the fans like to mess with Jon or whatever. Jon Jones isn’t afraid of anybody, and Jon Jones will fight anybody. It’s just a matter of getting the fight done now.

    ‘That’s our job.’

Fans fume at ‘sick’ MMA event after three female Instagram and OnlyFans models are destroyed by two male fighters in Romania

An MMA company in Romania has caused controversy by staging an event that saw two male fighters go up against a team of three women.

The intergender fight was put on by promotion company Real Xtreme Fighting, better known as RXF.

The female fighters all have big followings on Instagram, including Alicia Bonita – who also creates erotic content on OnlyFans.

Bonita, Denisa Costea and Maria Adriana were dressed all in white and twerked for the cameras before entering the cage.

Their opponents were Costica Prisecaru and Sebastian Rechinu.

The women wore headguards, while the men did not.

None of the fighters held back, with kicks and punches flying left, right and centre.

One of those kicks landed firmly in the stomach of Adriana, who later posted a defiant statement via Instagram.

She wrote: ‘The difference is that I stayed standing. Don’t underestimate women anymore and don’t denigrate them just because you’re men.

‘You have nothing extra. It hurts the face again.’

The contest was won emphatically by Prisecaru and Rechinu.

But Adriana refused to accept the fight was over and had to be restrained by security staff after trying to attack Rechinu while the male duo were celebrating their victory.

Reaction to the event online was mostly negative, with multiple comments describing it as ‘sick’.

Writing on social media, one fight fan asked: ‘Why is this allowed?’

Another user wrote: ‘This just made me sad’.

Meanwhile, kickboxer and self-proclaimed misogynist influencer Andrew Tate wrote: ‘Welcome to Romania!’, followed by a smiley face.

Another commenter said: ‘Why not 1 normal guy 3 professional women fighters, those chicks prob just got their nails done.’

This was not the first intergender fight put on by RXF.

There was an event last year that saw two women fight against one man.

That fight also sparked widespread condemnation online, though some fans enjoyed it.

‘This definitely needs to be a new sport,’ one reacted, while another declared: ‘This is actual comedy’.

Superstar UFC champion shockingly VACATES his world title and is set for move up, Dana White confirms – lining up blockbuster fight for belt

Ilia Topuria has vacated his UFC featherweight title in a major shock and will look to take the step up to lightweight, Dana White has confirmed.

Topuria, who recorded a knockout victory over Max Holloway at UFC 308 last October, is now set to move up to the 155lb limit, setting up a blockbuster showdown between Alex Volkanovski and Diego Lopes for the vacant belt at UFC 314 in April.

That means a new king of the division will be crowned when the UFC makes its return to Miami at Kaseya Center while Topuria’s next fight will be announced soon.

White detailed the thinking behind the surprise decision during a late night message on social media, saying: ‘Topuria felt like he’s done all that he can in that division and he feels like he cemented his legacy and his body cannot make the weight anymore.

‘So Topuria will be moving up to 155lb, and will be vacating the featherweight title.

‘The way that this works is as soon as the first punch was thrown in this fight, the title will be vacant and we’ll announce what Topuria’s next fight will be when it’s done.’

‘As crazy as it sounds, I hope Ilia goes up to [155lb]. I really do,’ Joe Rogan said earlier this month. ‘Volkanovski vs Lopes [at] 145, Ilia goes up to ’55. I don’t care if he only defended the title one time or didn’t, who cares? Let’s go. Let’s f***ing go.

‘It’d be nice [to see him fight some of the other contenders at featherweight] but also who cares? Let’s go. Let’s f***ing go.’

Topuria is eyeing up a mouthwatering fight with Islam Makhachev and has made no secret of his desire to take him on, having publicly called him out last month.

‘Islam, if I want to, I can finish you. If I want to, I can knock you out,’ Topuria said on social media. ‘I’ll make it look easy. See you soon [winks].’

Volkanovski will make his return to the octagon for the first time in over a year.

He last fought when he lost the belt to Topuria at UFC 298 in February 2024.

‘The Great’ surrendered the title after five successful defences, including two impressive victories over Max Holloway.

BREAKING NEWSLeon Edwards’ new opponent for London’s UFC Fight Night 255 is confirmed with Jack Della Maddalena replaced in headline contest

The 33-year-old, who fights out of Birmingham, had originally been scheduled to meet Jack Della Maddalena on March 22 at the O2 Arena.

However, Della Maddalena has since been promoted to the UFC 315 main event, where he will fight Belal Muhammad for the welterweight title in Montreal.

UFC CEO and president Dana White revealed on Wednesday night that Edwards will instead take on 32-year-old American Sean Brady in London.

White broke the news via Instagram Live, before UFC officials later confirmed it.

Edwards is No1 ranked contender in the UFC’s 170lb division after losing the welterweight belt to Muhammad in Manchester in July.

During that impressive run of victories, Edwards overcame Donald Cerrone, Gunnar Nelson, Rafael dos Anjos, Kamaru Usman, and Colby Covington.

Next opponent Brady – who is ranked fifth in the welterweight division – has won 17 of his first 18 fights in UFC.

He too was beaten by Muhammad, who stopped him in the second round of their featured preliminary bout at UFC 280 in 2022.

Edwards vs Brady will headline UFC Fight Night 255, while other contests on the card will include Jan Blachowicz vs Carlos Ulberg, Gunnar Nelson vs Kevin Holland, and Molly McCann vs Istela Nunes.

EXCLUSIVEMMA star Paul Hughes hits back at Conor McGregor over ‘deeply disrespectful’ comments after Usman Nurmagomedov loss – and talks new-found fame after PFL rise

If you were to turn the clocks back by 12 months, the name Paul Hughes would likely only be recognised by keen mixed martial arts aficionados.

Now, the PFL star has become a well-known figure within the sport after his closely contested fight with Usman Nurmagomedov at PFL Champions Series 1 last month.

‘Big News’ fell to a majority decision defeat on the night but in many ways he emerged a winner as the MMA world took note of his impressive abilities first-hand.

However, amidst the reaction to the bout emerged a shameful X-rated tirade from UFC star Conor McGregor – who took a swipe at Hughes’ Northern Irish nationality.

For Hughes, who fights out of Belfast, it was a point that clearly hit home for him. ‘What he said was unbelievably disrespectful,’ he explained to Mail Sport.

‘It’s probably one of the most disrespectful things that you could say to a fellow Irishman, especially coming from the north of the island. To say that I’m not truly Irish is deeply disrespectful.’

After his fight, Hughes was on the receiving end of an X-rated tirade from Conor McGregor

Yet, despite the strong words, Hughes remained level-headed. ‘I didn’t take it all that personally. I don’t think it was the Conor that we once knew speaking to me’.

Hughes also stressed that he wasn’t in the business of fighting for validation from McGregor or anyone else. ‘I take that with a pinch of salt, because I don’t believe that’s the man we once knew.’

After the fight, Hughes told Nurmagomedov’s team that he had always respected them, notably distancing himself from McGregor by saying: ‘I’m not like this other guy, I’m my own man,’ an apparent reference to McGregor.

McGregor wasted no time in responding. Making reference to the Irish flag draped around Hughes’ shoulders post-fight, he wrote: ‘Get that flag off you you little know what you are **** form up there.’ The post was swiftly deleted.

Hughes’ battle with Nurmagomedov was seen as his introduction party on the world stage. Despite the defeat, Hughes feels his profile has only grown, and he’s keen to prove that the loss doesn’t define him.

‘I thought the decision should have gone my way,’ Hughes said of his fight with Nurmagomedov. ‘I still believe that was my fight.

‘But all in all, I view it as a positive experience, where my stock has absolutely gone through the roof. And I expected that. I did expect to get my hand raised. But I just need to make sure my hand is raised next time.’

Reflecting on his performance, Hughes acknowledged that there were moments where he could have been more aggressive, but he was cautious not to make any mistakes against such a skilled opponent.

‘I don’t think there were many holes in my game. But when you’re fighting someone with such a good wrestling base, it’s not as easy to just rush in throwing hands. It’s a chess match,’ he explained.

Hughes did, however, point to a pivotal moment in the fourth round that he believes may have swung the fight in Nurmagomedov’s favor.

‘The head clash really affected the momentum of the fight. I think I was getting to him, and I was going to get him out of there. But after the five-minute recovery time, he came back strong, and that was tough to deal with.’

Despite the disappointment of the loss, Hughes is adamant that the exposure he gained from the fight has been a huge boost, both for him personally and for the PFL.

‘This fight went into new territory in terms of worldwide exposure. I think people get too caught up in the UFC brand, thinking that’s where all the best fighters are. But we showed that that’s definitely not the case,’ Hughes said.

‘True MMA fans were tuning in, and beyond that, we got casual fans interested too. That’s very important for the PFL.’

Looking ahead, Hughes is laser-focused on a potential rematch with Usman Nurmagomedov, who remains undefeated and a rising star in the sport.

‘The rematch will happen definitely this year,’ Hughes declared confidently. ‘I know when I fight him, I’ll beat him, and there will be a trilogy when it’s all said and done.’

Hughes also commented on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s kind offer to help him train after the fight, but made it clear that he won’t be taking up that offer until after his rivalry with Usman is settled.

‘It was a very generous offer, but it won’t be something I’ll look to do until all things are said and done with Usman and myself,’ he said.

With his confidence unwavering and his future looking bright, Paul Hughes is ready to make an even bigger name for himself in the PFL.

His journey to the top may have hit a bump in the road against Usman Nurmagomedov, but with a clear plan for the future, it’s only a matter of time before Hughes reasserts himself as one of the sport’s rising stars.

The Irishman is a regular presence at their events and does plenty to promote the company.

McGregor took to a recent public BKFC media event and vowed to one day fight for the promotion

‘Yes, the warrior spirit burns inside me. ‘If you think I’m up here giving these speeches and leading these men into battle and I wont step in there myself, think again,’ McGregor declared.

‘For sure, Conor McGregor will fight in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. Mark my words.’

McGregor went on to tease potential match-ups with men that he has plenty of history with.

‘There are many bouts, showcase bouts you could say. Michael Perry, Mike Perry. You could say Jeremy Stephens,’ he said.

‘You could say a rematch against Eddie Alvarez. You could say many matches.

‘But the lightweight title, who is the champion right now, lightweight or welterweight? Let’s see. I’m open. We’ll see when it comes.’

McGregor has not fought since breaking his leg in his fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021.

The Dubliner was booked to face Michael Chandler last summer but the bout was cancelled after he broke his toe.

The shock UFC fighter who dropped Jon Jones in sparring revealed

Jon Jones was once dropped by a unknown MMA fighter during sparring, a former team-mate of the UFC heavyweight champion has claimed.

Jones has suffered just one defeat in his illustrious career when he was disqualified against Matt Hamill for utilising illegal 12-6 elbows, a move that has since been removed from the sport’s list of banned techniques.

Other than the solitary blemish on his record Jones has been largely dominant inside the Octagon, with a contentious decision win over Dominick Reyes in 2020 representing arguably his most competitive fight.

However, according to former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit, Jones has faced his fair share of adversity inside the gym.

Appearing on the Jaxxon Podcast hosted by Jones’ former opponent Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Condit revealed he had sparred Jones frequently during their time together at Jackson Wink MMA.

Asked whether anyone has ever gotten the better of the pound-for-pound mainstay during their time together, Condit confirmed that a former UFC fighter had dropped Jones during a sparring session.

‘When John was a lot skinnier before he started, put weight on, before he started to find his power and start sitting down on his punches. I sparred Jon a lot.’ Condit said.

‘Then once he started sitting down on his punches and finding his power, I stopped doing that.’

He continued: ‘One morning, I think it was like a it’s like Tuesday morning, like 9am sparring. We’re in there, tipping and tapping. We get this dude.

‘I don’t know if you guys have ever heard of Adlan Amagov. He’s Chechen, and he fought in the UFC a couple times. His last fight, they carried his opponent out on a stretcher.

‘But yeah, he finished a number of guys. He was like a spinning back kick guy, and he f***** me up.

‘And then I think a round or two later, he hit Jon with that spinning back kick.’

Asked by Jackson whether the kick had dropped Jones, Condit responded in the affirmative.

After moving from war-torn Russian republic of Chechnya to Moscow as a youth, Amagov began training alongside MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko.

Amagov won eight of his first ten professional fights in Russia, before signing with now-defunct American promotion strikeforce in 2011.

During his time in Strikeforce Amagov competed in the middleweight division and amassed three wins from four fights, including a KO of future UFC title challenger Anthony Smith, before joining the UFC in 2013.

The 38-year-old won his first three fights in the Octagon, before unexpectedly retiring from MMA after reportedly growing tired in competing in the sport.

Despite this he returned for a final fight in 2016, submitting Dirlei Broenstrup in the first round in a light heavyweight bout.

Dustin Poirier laughs off speculation that he could face Paddy Pimblett in retirement fight as UFC veteran says it’s ‘legends only’ for final bout

Dustin Poirier has dismissed suggestions that he could face Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett in the final fight of his legendary career.

Poirier wants one last fight before hanging up his gloves, having come up short in his quest to capture the UFC lightweight title.

The former interim champion was submitted by Islam Makhachev in his last fight in June, the third time he has lost when challenging for the undisputed belt.

The Diamond hinted at retirement at the time but is now adamant that he will make the walk once more.

Fans have speculated that Pimblett could be the man on the other side of the cage bu Poirier is not looking to face someone at that stage of their career.

‘That’s an interesting fight, but not for my retirement fight,’ Poirier told Front Office Sports when asked about Pimblett. ‘It’s legends only, man.

‘I’m done,’ Poirier said. ‘I have 50-something cage fights. Like I said, I still have more to give. There’s a lot of opportunities and big fights that can be made, but I’ve just been doing it so long, and I’m in a place with my other ventures and my family.

‘I want to be home in a regular routine. I’ve given this sport a lot, and I think I’ve given it enough.’

Porier, perhaps best known for twice defeating Conor McGregor, told Jim Rome that no decision has been made yet.

‘I’m m still thinking about it, and me and the UFC, for the past couple of months, have been working on it.

I came up to them with the idea that I would love to lay the gloves down where I picked them up, in Louisiana.

‘The UFC hasn’t been here in 10 or 11 years, so to bring the organization, bring the UFC back to the state of Louisiana and retire here it means a lot to me, and I do think it could happen. I think we’re getting close. Nothing is for sure yet, but this summer is likely, I would say.

‘I’ve been in the UFC so long and done so much with them, I personally thought when I brought this idea to them, since they haven’t been here in so long, that they would kind of brush it aside. But they entertained it, and I was so excited when they called me back and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to get in touch with Louisiana, get in touch with New Orleans, and make something happen.’

Brutal aftermath of a UFC fight you don’t see on TV: Bloodied and broken fighters are wheeled out of Sydney arena surrounded by beauties – as Dana White goes nuclear on Aussie journo for digging up ghosts from his past

Sunday at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney was a day for Australian MMA fans to savour.

UFC 312 delivered an electrifying afternoon of action, including the much anticipated re-match between Dricus du Plessis and Sean Strickland for the UFC middleweight title.

However, after the lights had gone down and the crowds had dispersed, the physical toll of the sport could be witnessed as injured fighters left the venue – several on their way to hospital.

Australian cult hero Jimmy Crute was wheeled from the building to a waiting ambulance with an ice pack strapped to his leg and heavy swelling around his eyes.

Demoralised American superstar Tatiana Suarez needed assistance walking as she hobbled out into the daylight following her brutal 25-minute beatdown at the hands of Zhang Weili.

Local favourite Jake Matthews moved gingerly and used a crutch to negotiate the stairs. His battered left leg had an ice pack strapped to it.

Outspoken American Sean Strickland played up for his fans as he headed toward medics with a badly broken nose from his bloody encounter with Dricus du Plessis.

Strickland’s glamourous girlfriend, KJ, could be seen trailing behind him holding his shoes and personal possessions.

NSW Premier Chris Minns could also be seen exiting the building – a man who’d copped a lashing last week from Sydney Morning Herald editor Bevan Shields for his association with the promotion.

In an opinion piece, Shields said he ‘felt sick’ after listening to the Straight Talk with Mark Bouris podcast, which saw UFC president Dana White and Minns discuss the topic of hosting the UFC in Australia.

Shields questioned the government’s decision to spend taxpayer money on the events after it had been revealed that New South Wales had reached a $16million deal with the fighting championship to host multiple events.

In his piece, he referenced how the deal had previously prompted criticism from women’s safety advocates, Full Stop, who raised concerns over hosting an event that they claimed ‘glorified violence’. Opposition leader Mark Speakman had subsequently called Minns ‘tone deaf’ over the move.

Shields also referenced a 2022 incident where the fight mogul was filmed slapping his wife Anne in a nightclub.

After Sunday’s event, White unleashed at the Aussie media in an explosive press conference where he dubbed them ‘the biggest bunch of p***ies’.

‘I saw a story where the guy was like “I saw Dana do a podcast with the Premier and it physically made me sick” – holy f**king s**t, you guys must have the biggest bunch of p***ies of all time in the media here,’ White said.

‘That guy has to be the biggest f**king wimp on planet earth.’

It also comes after White hit out at the Daily Telegraph on Instagram earlier this week, after the outlet slammed Strickland for his explosive comments, in which he criticised the Australian government, branding it ‘communist’.

The paper had published a picture of Strickland on its back page with the headline: ‘Will someone, please… knock this guy out.’

White is understood to have reposted the back page on his Instagram story with the caption: ‘Australian news paper lol’.

The UFC boss also read out the official attendance numbers for the event, which was a record for Australia.

‘The attendance was 18,253, sell out, USD$7.7million gate, that’s the record gate for any Australian indoor arena, ever.

‘It’s the continent record – we beat our own record for that one.’

Nathan Cleary headlines Aussie stars at UFC 312 – as the Panthers halfback reveals why he thinks MMA ‘is nothing like any other sport’

NRL star Nathan Cleary was one of multiple Aussie sports stars spotted at the Qudos Bank Arena for Sunday’s UFC 312 event.

Controversial American star, who had previously lashed out at Australia calling the government ‘communist’, was beaten in a brutal and bloody slugfest by South African fighter Dricus Du Plessis in the headline event.

Du Plessis broke his opponent’s nose as he went on to secure a unanimous decision victory against Strickland in their rematch, to retain his middleweight title.

In front of a record attendance at an indoor Australian arena, Zhang Weili fended off Tatiana Suarez to retain her women’s strawweight title while young Aussie fighter Quillan Salkilld got the fans on their feet, just 19 seconds into his bout against Anshul Jubli.

He produced a prolific knockout in his debut fight with a huge overhand right, sending his opponent to the canvas with the referee ending the contest.

Cleary was one of several high-profile names inside the Qudos Bank Arena and met with UFC President Dana White during the night and sat alongside fellow NRL stars Hudson Young and Scott Sorensen.

Elsewhere, other big names were spotted in the crowd including NRL boss Peter V’landys, who was also seen meeting with White.

Thanasi Kokkinakis, who had suffered an early exit at last month’s Australian Open, was also seen watching on in the crowd, while cricket great Steve Waugh also enjoyed the evening.

A pair of Swans stars, Tom Papley and Justin McInerney also took a break from pre-season training to head over to the Olympic Park for the evening.

Cleary, meanwhile, is hoping to make his return to NRL action next month, after he underwent shoulder surgery in the off-season.

The four-time Premiership winner had been spotted on Saturday watching his team-mates square off against the Canberra Raiders in round one of the Witzer Pre-Season Challenge and stopped for a quick interview with 7News ahead of UFC 312.

‘Yeah, pumped, I came last time I was in Sydney too, so I’m happy to be here again and enjoying it,’ the footy star told the outlet upon arriving at the venue.

Cleary admitted that he likes to tune in to watch the fighting championship on a regular basis.

‘Pretty regularly. I’ve been into it for a while now and I just love elite sport and seeing them do their thing and when they go into that Octagon it’s like nothing any other sport.

‘It’s pretty amazing what they do.’

His comments before the fight perhaps couldn’t have been any truer, after Strickland appeared to re-set his broken nose during his bout against Du Plessis mid-way through the fight.

Blood was seen pouring down his face and the South African lumped praise on his opponent for continuing the fight.

‘He was definitely rattled, I could see him going backwards. My coaches, I could hear them saying: “Chill, chill out.” I honestly thought he was going to but just shows you the calibre of fighter and his calibre of heart he’s deserving of all the hype and what a tough, tough person.

‘I have all the respect in the world for him.’

Du Plessis also revealed that he challenged Alex Pereira in the Octagon after the fight.

‘Since he’s standing across the octagon…Is there no one else? Is there no one else?’ the South African had said.

He later revealed in his press conference that the pair had met backstage.

‘Yeah, he came up to me and asked: “Did you challenge me?” Du Plessis said.
