Celtic face the prospect of losing manager Brendan Rodgers in the days ahead in what promises to be a pivotal week for the Parkhead club.

The Hoops face a lengthy trip to Azerbaijan to face Kairat Almaty in the Champions League playoff having drawn the first leg 0-0 at Celtic Park while the final days of the transfer window will also shape the club’s season.

Rodgers has made no secret of his frustration with the board’s penny-pinching attitude towards signings, leading to speculation over his future.

According to The Sun, Nottingham Forest have made the former Liverpool boss their top target to replace Nuno Espirito Santo at the City Ground.

Rodgers is said to be “hugely admired” by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who appears ready to sack his current manager due to a clash over transfer policy.

Two managers at war with their clubs

Ironically, Rodgers’ frustration over a similar issue at Celtic Park could be the catalyst for the move.

“You know these games are tough games and you know that you want to get your best players in and have players in as quick as you can to tackle these sorts of situations,” the manager complained last week following the Champions League stalemate with Kairat.

“There’s only so many ways that I can dress up that we don’t have the players here. It was pretty clear. You don’t need to look into the future too far.

“I think that we need to improve the squad. There was clarity around that for a long time.

“We see that. I think supporters see that. We need to improve.”

Celtic have made six new signings this summer but have spent a total of just €3.5m, despite bringing in more than €20m in direct transfers plus a sizeable bonus from Jeremie Frimpong’s move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool.
