Cesc Fabregas has admitted he ‘hurt’ Arsene Wenger by quitting Arsenal for Barcelona in 2011, with the Gunners boss rejecting the chance for the midfielder to return to the Emirates before his eventual move to Chelsea.
Fabregas left Arsenal in 2011 after eight years at the club, having joined the Gunners from Barcelona as a 16-year-old in 2003.
The Spaniard went on to become a key player for the north Londoners, winning the FA Cup in 2005 and reaching the Champions League final in 2006.
However, after eight years in England, Fabregas decided to return to his boyhood club Barcelona in 2011, a move which left Wenger disappointed.
Fabregas has now revealed that Wenger was open to the idea of him returning to Arsenal before he eventually joined Chelsea in 2014, but the Frenchman was not willing to match the Blues’ offer.
“I hurt him [Wenger] a lot when I left for Barcelona,” Fabregas told the Daily Mail.
“He was very sad. He was very hurt. He was very angry with me. He didn’t show it that much but I could feel it.
“He was very disappointed. He said to me: ‘You don’t have to go. You can stay here. You can be the captain. You can be the leader of this team. You can be the one to take Arsenal back to the top.’
“He was very, very sad. He was very hurt. He was very angry with me. He didn’t show it that much but I could feel it.

Fabregas went on to reveal that Wenger was open to the idea of him returning to Arsenal before he eventually joined Chelsea in 2014, but the Frenchman was not willing to match the Blues’ offer.
“He said to me: ‘If you want to come back one day, you know you are welcome here.’ But he couldn’t match the offer from Chelsea.
