CHELSEA are in talks over a potential transfer swap with RB Leipzig involving Timo Werner and Josko Gvardiol.
The Blues are reported as being happy with the prospect of their forward leaving, while remaining in desperate need of another centre-back.
The two clubs had initial discussions over the weekend with Leipzig “pushing more” than other teams for Werner.
The wantaway German left the Red Bull Arena in 2020 but has struggled since his move to London.
Now reports suggest he could be set for a dream return – while Chelsea could land yet another defender as part of the deal.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Leipzig are now pushing more than Juventus for Timo Werner, after the meeting with Chelsea on Sunday – still waiting to see if there’s room for a swap deal.
“He’s the main target for RB Leipzig, leading the race over Juventus. No direct talks yet with Newcastle.”
The journalist earlier tweeted that “[Todd] Boehly [is] ready to let Timo Werner leave on loan” and Gvardiol now topped the list alongside Wes Fofana of defenders they were targeting.
Werner scored 78 times in 127 appearances across his four years at Leipzig, but has struggled to rediscover his scoring form since.
The 26-year-old had been making noises in pre-season, as he suggested he could be happy “everywhere”, not just at Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Gvardiol has impressed since his 2020 arrival to Leipzig and is seen as a contender to heal Chelsea’s defensive shortage.
The 20-year-old and Leicester’s Fofana appear to be the main targets for the club following the recruitment of the experienced Kalidou Koulibaly.
