UFC President Dana White has teased a jaw-dropping stadium show for Conor McGregor’s return bout against Michael Chandler.
McGregor is set to make his long-awaited return to the octagon on January 23, 2021, when he takes on former Bellator lightweight champion Chandler in the main event of UFC 257.
The fight will be held at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, but White has hinted that the promotion could be planning something even bigger for the Irishman’s return.
Speaking to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, White said: “We’re talking about doing some crazy stuff for this fight. We’re talking about doing a stadium show. We’re talking about doing some really cool, unique things for this fight.”
White did not provide any further details on the potential stadium show, but it is likely that the promotion will look to make the most of McGregor’s return to the octagon.
McGregor has not fought since January 2020, when he defeated Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds at UFC 246.
The 32-year-old has since been involved in a number of controversies, including a sexual assault allegation and a bar brawl in Dublin.
However, White is confident that McGregor will be able to put all of that behind him and focus on his return to the octagon.
“Conor is in a great place right now,” White said. “He’s training hard, he’s in great shape, he’s motivated and he’s ready to go.”
McGregor will be looking to make a statement against Chandler, who is making his UFC debut after a successful stint in Bellator.
The 34-year-old is a former three-time Bellator lightweight champion and is widely regarded as one of the best lightweights in the world.
Chandler will be looking to make a statement of his own and prove that he belongs in the UFC.
The fight between McGregor and Chandler is sure to be an exciting one, and White’s tease of a potential stadium show only adds to the anticipation.
It remains to be seen what the promotion has in store for the fight, but it is sure to be something special.
