Legendary India batter Virat Kohli faced a tough outing as he fell for a five-ball duck after Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first in a crucial Super Eight clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood outfoxed Kohli with a bouncer, dismissing him for a duck in his first over.

Hazlewood delivered a short, quick ball with extra bounce that caught Kohli off guard. Attempting a pull shot, Kohli only managed a top edge that soared towards wide mid-on. Tim David, showcasing excellent athleticism, sprinted back from inside the circle for 25 meters to secure a well-judged catch. This dismissal sent Kohli back to the pavilion without scoring from five balls faced.

A rare unwanted record

With this dismissal, Kohli became the second Indian to score two ducks in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. He had previously been dismissed for a golden duck against the United States of America (USA) earlier in the tournament. The only other Indian batter to register two ducks in a single T20 World Cup edition is Ashish Nehra, who achieved this unwanted record in 2010. Kohli has struggled throughout this World Cup, with scores of 1, 4, 0, 24, 37, and 0.

Rohit Sharma’s counter-attack

Following Kohli’s early dismissal, Team India captain Rohit Sharma took charge. On a mission to counter-attack, Rohit smashed Mitchell Starc for 28 runs in a single over. Immediately following Hazlewood’s over, Rohit hit a six off Pat Cummins on the very first ball of the fourth over. Just as India seemed to be gaining momentum, rain intervened and halted play.
