Here’s why Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t received his salary for four months from Bangladesh Cricket Board

Bangladesh’s cricketing icon, Shakib Al Hasan, has been facing a significant financial hurdle as he remains unpaid for the final four months of his contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Shakib, one of the most celebrated all-rounders in international cricket, has been dealing with legal challenges in Bangladesh. He is reportedly facing murder allegations related to political unrest, which led to his bank accounts being frozen by the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) on November 6, 2024. This development has prevented the BCB from disbursing his salary for September, October, November and December 2024.

BCB’s stance on the financial implications

Shakib is entitled to receive approximately BDT 48 lakhs (USD 38,400) excluding taxes for the period in question. Despite the BCB’s assurance that they will honour their contractual obligations, the frozen bank accounts have created a logistical challenge in making these payments.

Nazmul Abedin, the cricket operation chairman of the BCB, has reiterated the board’s commitment to fulfilling their contractual obligations. “He [Shakib] will get his salary as per the agreement because whether you play or not there is an agreement in place and certainly we will try to fulfill our commitment as per the agreement,” Abedin stated to Cricbuzz. This assurance underscores the BCB’s intention to resolve the issue once the legal hurdles are cleared.
