Though the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction is distant, excitement is already stirring, particularly with the forthcoming major auction. This auction necessitates all franchises to re-enter their players into the auction pool, while allowing retention of a select few. The guidelines for player retention are currently being debated, adding to the anticipation.
BCCI kicks off retention process
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated preparations for the retention strategy. IPL franchises have proposed increasing the number of players they can retain for the upcoming three seasons. Opinions vary among teams on the number of players that should be retained.
Franchises push for more retentions
As reported by Cricbuzz, a majority of the 10 IPL teams have asked for a higher number of player retentions compared to the last cycle. In 2021, the BCCI permitted the retention of up to four players, with specific limits on Indian and overseas players. This year, franchises are advocating for more retentions, with some suggesting up to eight, while a few prefer no retentions at all.

Varied opinions on retentions and salary cap
BCCI Acting CEO and IPL head Hemang Amin has recently had a chat with franchise CEOs to take their perspectives on the retention policy and the salary cap for the next three years. Most franchises have requested retaining five to seven players, with one suggesting eight, while a few teams favor no retentions and only RTMs. The BCCI has committed to announcing its final decisions at the upcoming owners’ meeting. Further, team CEOs were also asked about the player purse, with differing opinions. The general consensus suggests a salary cap between INR 110-120 crore, with a possible increase of INR 20 crore. Not to mention, the current cap is INR 100 crore.
Impact player rule discussion
Additionally, discussions have also engaged around the Impact Player rule. While media rights holders seemed to be favourable, the coaching staff is not satisfied. Reports suggests that the IPL governing body is expected to retain the Impact Player rule for the time being.
