Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed high praise for one of India’s current cricket icons, referring to him as the greatest white-ball player the world has ever seen. Ganguly’s comments come despite the player’s recent dip in form, including struggles in recent matches.

Sourav Ganguly highlights Indian cricket star’s exceptional achievements

Ganguly praised Virat Kohli as a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer, comparable to former Indian women cricketers Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj. He lauded Kohli’s incredible achievement of scoring 80 international centuries and called him the greatest white-ball player ever. However, the former Indian captain expressed surprise at Kohli’s decline in form after his century in the first Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia at Perth, noting that despite his struggles in India, he had expected a strong series in Australia, which unfortunately did not materialize.

“Virat Kohli is a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer, like Jhulan is, like Mithali is. To score 80 hundreds in international cricket is incredible. To me, he is the greatest white-ball player the world has seen. But I was really surprised by the way he batted in Australia after the hundred in Perth. He struggled before that here in India, but I thought after the hundred in Perth, it would be a big series for him,” Ganguly said in an interview with Revsportz in Kolkata.

Despite these challenges, Ganguly expressed in Kohli’s ability to overcome challenges, highlighting his resilience and adaptability. Kolkata lad acknowledged that every player has strengths and weaknesses but emphasized the importance of adapting to weaknesses over time. Ganguly believes Kohli still has a lot of cricket left in him.

“But it happens. I think every player has his weaknesses and strengths, but what matters is how you adapt to your weaknesses as you play great cricket over a period of time. I still feel there is a lot of cricket left in Virat Kohli,” he added.
