'Emotional' Ferguson savours the acclaim of Ibrox fans as he leads Rangers to victory over Dundee United in his likely final home game

'Emotional' Ferguson savours the acclaim of Ibrox fans as he leads Rangers to victory over Dundee United in his likely final home game

Barry Ferguson admitted that he was left feeling ‘emotional’ as he bid a probable farewell to the home crowd at Ibrox.

The interim Rangers boss watched his team come from behind to beat Dundee United 3-1 in their final home game of the season.

Two goals from Cyriel Dessers and another from Nico Raskin were enough for Rangers to take the victory.

Unlikely to be offered the job long-term beyond the summer, Ferguson and his backroom staff were applauded as they walked round the pitch at full-time.

Rangers are on the hunt for a new manager in what is likely to be a huge summer of change around the club.

But Ferguson insisted that he has loved every minute since replacing Philippe Clement three months ago.

Asked about the crowd signing his name towards the end of the match, he said: ‘It means a lot because it’s a club that I’ve been at since I was seven or eight years old.

‘I’m not scared to say it was a bit emotional. Since I’ve come in, I’ve given it everything. I’ve given it everything that I had.

‘I said in my first interview that I was going to be me. I’m not going to try and kid anyone on. I really enjoyed it. It was good to get that reception.

‘It’s easy to be in holiday mode but I demanded that wasn’t the case, certainly, starting on Sunday against Aberdeen.

‘We got that monkey off our back with a win against Aberdeen (at home) and I just wanted it to continue tonight and I’ve got to give the players credit.’

On this potentially being his final home game as boss, Ferguson added: ‘It’s been a brilliant three months for me, I’ve loved every single minute of it.

‘I never thought it would ever happen, but I’ve come in and I’ve given it my all and so has my staff, and, to be fair to the players, so have they.

“We’ve had a few disappointing results as I said, but again, I’ve demanded from them to come back from poor performances and poor results.

‘They’ve always done that for me, but in terms of the supporters, (it was) a brilliant reception going round there.

‘We’ve still got one game to go on Saturday against Hibs at Easter Road. We need all focus to go on that now.’

Dessers now has 50 goals for Rangers after his brace last night and Ferguson praised the much-maligned striker.

He said: ‘I’m delighted for him because I think a big man comes in for unfair criticism. I really do.

‘But to work with him for the last three months, I see how much effort he puts in on the training field. He works really hard at his game. He gives you everything.’

Vaclav Cerny looked emotional as he waved farewell to the crowd ahead of his probable return to parent club Wolfsburg in the summer.

Ferguson added: ‘He has had a brilliant season for us and has been a brilliant player for Rangers.’

United boss Jim Goodwin said: ‘It was disappointing for us with some of the goals we lost, but we’ve got a massive game on Saturday now against Aberdeen to get into Europe.’
