Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz for an initial fee of €117.5 million.

The Germany international, who was courted by Bayern Munich and Manchester City before opting to join Liverpool, has signed a five-year contract at Anfield, keeping him at the club until 2030.

The season prior, he played an instrumental role as Xabi Alonso’s side secured their first ever Bundesliga title after going the entire domestic campaign unbeaten.

He will reportedly earn a weekly salary of €234,000 (£200,000) at Liverpool and he has become the club’s all-time record signing. Furthermore, Wirtz will become the most expensive signing in Premier League history if add-on clauses are met – with Liverpool’s potential outlay reaching a whopping €136.3m.

Wirtz has become the second player to join Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, following the arrival of Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong for €35m.

The pair were pictured on holiday together ahead of Wirtz’s medical at Liverpool and they will continue their bromance at Anfield after a four-year spell with each other at Bayer Leverkusen.

It remains to be seen where Arne Slot will deploy Wirtz next season, with the Germany star best suited to a No.10 role. He is, however, capable of playing as a left winger and he featured in this role at the 2024 European Championship.

It’s likely that his attributes will be utilised in a multitude of positions, with Slot adding a much-needed versatile attacker to his first-team squad.

Wirtz could make his Liverpool debut against Preston North End on 13 July, while his first competitive appearance for the club could come against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield final on 10 August.
