The Allianz Arena will adopt a different name throughout the entirety of the European Championship.

Euro 2024 will get underway on Friday night when hosts Germany take on Scotland at Bayern Munich’s stadium.

A ceremony will take place before kick-off and a number of former Germany players will be honoured, with a firework display also set to take place.

The opening ceremony will be viewed by millions around the globe but commentators and pundits will not refer to the stadium as Allianz Arena.

A little-known UEFA technicality means that in the European Championship and Champions League alongside other European competitions, the ground is simply listed as the ‘Munich Football Arena’.

Bayern Munich's home will adopt a new name throughout the European Championship

Bayern Munich’s home will adopt a new name throughout the European Championship

This is due to UEFA not recognising stadium sponsors under their rules regarding sponsorships.

This isn’t just the case for the Allianz Arena. Arsenal’s home ground, the Emirates Stadium, goes by ‘Arsenal Stadium’ on European nights.

Meanwhile the home of Manchester City, Etihad Stadium,is renamed to the ‘City of Manchester Stadium’ for UEFA games.

In fact, UEFA sponsorships rules have also seen teams forced to alter their name slightly.

Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg shorten their name to FC Salzburg, and use a modified crest to fit within the European body’s regulations.
