Ally McCoist made a bold claim after Tyrone Mings saved Aston Villa from conceding the second goal against Club Brugge on Tuesday.
The clash at Jan Breydelstadion started in the best way possible for Unai Emery’s men after Leon Bailey gave the lead following a set-piece play in the third minute of the game.
However, with 0-1 on the scoresheet, Villa lost control of the match as the Belgian side’s left back Maxim De Cuyper equalised in the 12th minute.
Club Bruges were close to netting another goal following a spectacular cross from Christos Tzolis on the left wing, followed by a confident strike by captain Hans Vanaken.
But Mings – who also assisted Bailey’s opening goal – denied it in the 69th minute with one of the most memorable saves in the history of the Champions League.

Mings’ save clearly boosted Emery’s men’s confidence as Villa followed with a series of counterattacks until they finally took the lead in the 82nd minute through an own goal from Brandon Mechele.
Moments later, newcomer Marco Asensio recorded his fifth goal for the Birmingham club as he scored a penalty to conclude a 3-1 away win for the visitors.
The Spaniard became the first player in the tournament’s history to reach 50 appearances from the bench on Tuesday.
The win over the Belgian side also marked his 70th match in the Champions League, including 59 for Real Madrid and 10 for Paris Saint-Germain.
Meanwhile, Mings enjoys a productive 2025 amid Villa’s injuries in the defensive line, with 10 games out of 11 occasions since the beginning of January.
However, Pau Torres finally returned to the squad after his metatarsal fracture, which he sustained at the end of December last year.
The 28-year-old Spain international was a big doubt for Emery and remained on the bench during the entire game.
