Bentancur apologizes to Son Heung-min for offensive comment

Rodrigo Bentancur has issued a heartfelt apology to Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min after making a comment about the appearance of South Koreans.

During an appearance on Uruguayan TV an interviewer asked Bentancur for Son’s Spurs shirt and the midfielder responded with a bizarre comment.

The 26-year-old told the interviewer that he should instead get the shirt from Son’s cousin as ‘they all look the same’.

Bentancur’s comment unsurprisingly caused an uproar on social media and he has since issued and apology to the South Korea international.

He posted on instagram: ‘Sony brother! I apologise to you for what happened, it was just a very bad joke!

‘You know what I love you and i would never disrespect you or hurt you or anyone else! I love you brother!’

Bentancur comment comes under year after a fan was handed a three-year football ban for racially abusing Son.

Robert Garland made the racial gesture at the forward after he was substituted in the 89th minute against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on 6 May, 2023.

The 44-year-old football fan pleaded guilty to racially aggravated harassment at Highbury Magistrates Court on August 25 and was convicted later that year.

The incident in May 2023 marked the third time Son had been targeted by racial abuse during while representing Tottenham last year.

The South Korean star encountered similar fallout after games against Chelsea and West Ham earlier in 2023.

A Chelsea supporter was given a stadium ban by the club and charged with a racially aggravated public order offence for making a racially aggravated gesture at Son.
