Dortmund is looking an increasingly unlikely destination for wantaway Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford this winter.
Mail Sport reported earlier this month that England star’s representatives have held discussions with several clubs over a move this month after he was dropped by Ruben Amorim following his admission that he was ‘ready for a new challenge’ away from Old Trafford. Â
Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund were one of the clubs in talks with the player’s team but his his ÂŁ350,000-per-week wages have all but ruled the German side out of the running for his signature, even on a short-term basis.Â
The side had been leading contenders to land the forward after they made a concerted effort to convince him, with Sebastian Kehl and Sven Mislintat believing he could have same impact as Jadon Sancho last season.
United wanted a deal structured same way with loan fee and performance related bonuses.Â
The situation at Dortmund is further complicated by the sacking of head coach Nuri Sahin following the side’s defeat by Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday night – their fourth loss in a row.Â
Marcus Rashford’s representatives have held talks with several clubs over a January move
Borussia Dortmund have effectively been priced out of a deal for Rashford in this window
His representatives held further talks with Barcelona sporting director Deco earlier this week
The deal could still be revisited in final throes of window if cost comes down. Dortmund are also interested in Brentford’s Kevin Schade but he is valued at ÂŁ45million.Â
With AC Milan completing a loan move for Manchester City captain Kyle Walker on Thursday, it realistically leaves Rashford with only one landing spot before the window shuts on February 3.Â
The 27-year-old’s representatives spoke to Barcelona sporting director Deco on Tuesday. The Spanish giants are understood to have always been Rashford’s preference but they would need to negotiate over the financial burden of a loan deal.
The talks were held in Lisbon, with Barcelona in Champions League action in the Portuguese city this week against Benfica.
Barcelona have made their desire to bring Rashford to the club during the transfer window clear.
However, the club acknowledged their pursuit is currently stuck due to not having the salary space required to register Rashford should they be able to strike a deal with Man United.
During this week’s meeting with Rashford’s entourage, Deco informed them of the side’s need to offload players before their make additions.Â
Defender Eric Garcia was close to completing a move to Como FC but the deal is now off. Meanwhile, Ansu Fati could depart to free up space for Rashford, who is viewed as his replacement.
The 27-year-old was all smiles at training on Wednesday ahead of United’s Europa League clash against Rangers
There remain a number of clubs monitoring what United do in the final weeks of the transfer market. Â
The forward appeared unfazed by the uncertainty surrounding his future during training ahead of United’s Europa League clash against Rangers.
Rashford was seen smiling during group exercises, with other shots demonstrating his focus on the session.
Elsewhere, United will continue talks with Leece over a move for full-back Patrick Dorgu as well as the sale of Alejandro Garnacho and Antony to Betis after their clash against the Scottish giants.Â
