Bruno Fernandes turned things around for Manchester United, with Harry Maguire and Rasmus Hojlund also scoring on the night.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)

ANDRE ONANA – 5

Made a costly mistake in a dominant first half by sliding the ball straight into the path of Jayden Bogle, who obliged by making it 1-0. Was never going to get near Ben Brereton Diaz’s strike.

DIOGO DALOT – 5.5

Almost scored after 38 seconds with a curled effort to the top corner but was under the microscope for two defensive lapses for both Sheffield United goals. Should have scored when one-on-one after a brilliant through ball by Bruno Fernandes.

HARRY MAGUIRE – 7.5

Is soldiering on despite limited training sessions and what a contribution he is providing. Again found the net, after scoring at Wembley on Sunday, and then won the penalty for the second goal. Strong Player of the Season contender is the England international.

CASEMIRO – 7

Could be accused of ball-watching for the Blades’ second goal, allowing Brereton Diaz to be left all alone in the six-yard box, but this was a solid display all told from the Brazilian. Plenty of his team-mates were much, much worse.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 6

Shifted to a more familiar right back role after his nightmare at Wembley on Sunday when playing left back, this was a so-so display from a player that is among the gaggle of stars entering the final 12 months’ of their deals who could be sold.

KOBBIE MAINOO – 6.5

Will have been disappointed at a poor touch on the edge of the box which cost him a glorious chance to score in a one-sided first half. Does do a great job of keeping the game ticking over though as he’s often so much calmer than those around him.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 6

Brought in for Scott McTominay, who was only fit enough for a late cameo, the Dane was largely neat and tidy in a game where United knew they would be able to dominate the ball. Was poor defensively for the visitors’ second.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 6.5

Missed two huge changes midway during first half which left him with head in hands. Did deliver the assist for Maguire’s opener and was a constant livewire down the left.

BRUNO FERNANDES – 8.5

He tries to do almost everything because too many aren’t at the level he knows he himself can reach. Got them back on level terms by converting from the penalty spot for his sixth goal in his last six league appearances and then scored number seven with an absolute ripper from distance.

ANTONY – 5

Was preferred to Amad Diallo but aside from some neat and tidy touches in unthreatening positions he didn’t do enough to justify the start. United continue to need a lot more from him.

RASMUS HOJLUND – 6

Continues to frustrate and looked set for another disappointing evening, this time against the league’s worst defence. Managed to get himself a much-needed goal after some brilliant work by Bruno Fernandes.

MANAGER: Erik ten Hag – 6.5

Needed an emphatic display after the debacle against Coventry but this was yet another stuttering display against the worst team in the league. Hard for him to keep finding positive spins for these sorts of games.

SUBS:

Amad Diallo (for Antony, 55) – 7

Scott McTominay (for Christian Eriksen, 64) – 6

Sheffield United XI: Foderingham 7; Trusty 6.5, Ahmedhodzic 6, Holgate 5; Brooks 5.5 (Souza 46, 6), Osborn 6.5, Arblaster 6.5, Hamer 6, Bogle 7 (Norwood 77); Archer 5 (McAtee 62, 6), Brereton Diaz 7
