The new play-off round to enter the round of 16 proper in the Champions League has served up plenty goals, shocks and surprises.

Seven-time European champions AC Milan were eliminated by Feyenoord on Tuesday night, while fellow Italian side Atalanta suffered an unexpected exit at the hands of Belgian outfit Club Brugge.

Bayern Munich survived an almighty scare against Celtic as they required a last-minute goal from Alphonso Davies to progress.

And of course, either Manchester City or Real Madrid will be absent from the last-16 with the two teams meeting in the second leg of their play-off fixture on Wednesday.

But who could Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa face in the round of 16 having already automatically qualified for that stage by virtue of finishing in the top eight of the initial league phase?

Here, Mail Sport takes a look at the possible opponents for English clubs.

Beginning with Liverpool, who finished top of the 32-team league phase with seven wins from eight games, the Reds are looking for a seventh European crown.

Arne Slot awaits one of three possible opponents heading into the play-offs – which will be one of either Paris Saint-Germain, Brest or Benfica.

Monaco were also in the running, but they were knocked out in dramatic fashion by Benfica in a tie that finished 4-3 on aggregate after a dramatic 3-3 draw in Lisbon on Tuesday night.

Liverpool fans might also assume that they will face one of PSG or Benfica, as the Parisians hold an imposing 3-0 lead over fellow Ligue 1 side Brest going into the second leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Moving on to Arsenal, the Gunners assured themselves of a place in the thanks to just one defeat in their eight group games.

Mikel Arteta’s men can be drawn against one of Juventus, Feyenoord or PSV Eindhoven.

Feyenoord gave the north Londoners a helping hand by knocking out AC Milan and – while no tie is straightforward in Europe – Arsenal may inwardly be pleased to have avoided another trip to the San Siro.

Juventus currently lead PSV 2-1 on aggregate ahead of the return leg in Eindhoven with the winner of that tie to be decided on Wednesday evening.

Enjoying their first seat at Europe top table since winning the European Cup in 1982, Aston Villa performed admirably on their return to the biggest stage.

They looked a force to be reckoned in with in their win against Bayern in October and no team will relish a visit to the cauldron on European nights that is Villa Park.

European expert Unai Emery will fancy his chances against anyone – and is likely to be happy facing Borussia Dortmund, Sporting or Club Brugge.

While you can never rule out a comeback in the Champions League, Dortmund are strong favourites to secure their place in the last-16 as they hold a 3-0 lead against Sporting from their meeting in the Portuguese capital last week.

But what about Manchester City should Pep Guardiola mastermind a victory at his old rivals Read Madrid?

The Citizens – should they manage to overcome Los Blancos – may end up facing their cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Atletico and Bayer Leverkusen were drawn in the same bracket for the round of 16 having finished fifth and sixth, making them the possible opponents for City.

For now though, the reigning Premier League champions have a job to do at the Santiago Bernabeu.
