Chelsea have reportedly activated the £20m release clause of Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams.

The Blues are keen to add more midfield reinforcements ahead of the new season and are looking to complete a deal for Adams after his release clause kicked in after Leeds were relegated to the Championship.

They have held discussions over a deal for Adams are confident he will make the move, pending that he passes a medical.

It comes after the Blues also outbid Liverpool for Romeo Lavia, as they submitted a £48m offer in an effort to sign him from Southampton.

Adams only joined Leeds from RB Leipzig last summer and isn’t keen on spending the season playing in the Championship following the club’s relegation to English football’s second-tier.

The midfielder was one of few bright sparks for Leeds last season, making 24 appearances across all competitions.

However, he missed the final two months of the season with a hamstring injury, and couldn’t help them in their bid to avoid the drop.

Adams suffered an injury setback during pre-season and is not expected to return to action until next month.

Chelsea have been left massively short on midfield options following the departures of the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic this summer.

The Blues have spent much of the summer pursuing Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, but recently had an £80m bid rebuffed with the Seagulls holding out for around £100m.

Adams is a cheaper option, as is Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, with Chelsea joining Liverpool in the race to sign the 19-year-old.

Liverpool have had three bids turned down for Lavia – the most recent of which was for £46m.

Chelsea are looking to trump their rivals after they made a £47m bid including add-ons for the Saints star.
