Dan Ashworth 'is being lined up for return to the Premier League' three months after being brutally sacked by Man United

Former Man United sporting director Dan Ashworth is reportedly being lined up by a Premier League club, three months after leaving Old Trafford.

The 54-year-old was abruptly axed by Man United in December, having been brought to the club from Newcastle United just five months earlier – a decision which cost the club £4.1million.

Mail Sport revealed that the co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had become frustrated at what was viewed as Ashworth’s indecision, particularly with regards a definitive plan regarding previous manager Erik ten Hag’s future and the Dutchman’s potential successor.

Ashworth has been working for Warwickshire Cricket Club in recent weeks, advising on performance strategy in a voluntary, unpaid capacity.

And now the former Brighton technical director is being coaxed back into football, according to Football Insider.

They are reporting that West Ham are in talks with Ashworth as a they bid to fill the hole left by technical director Tim Steidten who departed last month.

Steidten was held accountable for the club’s summer transfer dealings that saw West Ham splash nearly £130million on new signings.

The appointment of Ashworth at West Ham would unite him with manager Graham Potter with whom he worked so successfully to establish Brighton as a Premier League club.

It has been a tricky season for the Hammers who sacked Julen Lopetegui as manager in January who won just six of his 20 Premier League matches and left the club languishing at 14th in the table.

He was replaced by Potter who had a slow start to life in East London and the club are, in fact, one place lower in 15th. However, performances and results have picked up in recent weeks with the Hammers enjoying back-to-back wins over Arsenal and then Leicester.
