Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos’ protracted move to Fenerbahce is stalling amid new concerns the deal is in danger of falling through.

Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho has placed Carlos towards the top of his January shopping list and positive talks have taken place.

But it is understood the transfer is yet to be signed off by Fenerbahce, despite an agreement being within reach, and could now collapse owing to hesitation from the Turkish giants.

Mourinho has been under a degree of pressure at the Istanbul-based club, who are currently eight points behind leaders Galatasaray.

And there has been indications that the delay in ratifying Carlos’ switch stems from the uncertainty over the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss’ future.

The impasse has cast doubt over the deal amid indications the transfer may not be revived. Mourinho is keen for the player to arrive in Istanbul but it remains to be seen if the deal can go ahead.

Last month, the Portuguese boss took to social media to reassure fans over his health.

It was reported that the Fenerbahce boss needed to undergo surgery abroad due to a health problem.

However, Mournho has insisted there is nothing for his followers to worry about.

Taking to Instagram with a video message, he said: ‘wishing everyone a happy holiday season. May this time be full of love and happiness for you and your families.

‘For those of you who have shown concern, I can confirm reports of my surgery have been greatly exaggerated, it’s just a quick and minor procedure.

‘I will resume training on the first day back from the holidays, as always. I’ve never missed a session in 25 years, and I don’t intend to start now.
