Ederson sidelined from Copa America due to fractured eye socket in Man City’s victory against Tottenham; Brazil’s final squad announced

Ederson will miss this summer’s Copa America due to his eye injury.

The goalkeeper suffered a fractured eye socket in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham when he collided with Cristian Romero.

Brazil manager Dorival Junior has excluded Ederson from his squad and named uncapped Sao Paulo custodian Rafael, 34, in his place.

It is a huge blow for Ederson, Brazil, and their new manager, who is just two games into his tenure.

Stefan Ortega stepped in for Ederson against Spurs, producing a season-saving stop against Son Heung-min, played against West Ham, and and will start in the FA Cup final against Manchester United on Saturday.

Medical staff had rushed to Ederson’s aid after he lay stricken following Romero’s accidental blow to the head.

Despite the worrying scenes of players frantically waving them over, they saw that he was conscious and communicative. The Brazilian confirmed to them that he had not blacked out at any point and wanted to continue, which he did for a few minutes.

In retrospect that appeared misguided, with the 30-year-old hooked shortly after, though he was furious at his withdrawal.

City’s doctor, Max Sala, noted to Pep Guardiola that the eye could swell quickly and the manager replaced him with Stefan Ortega.

Sources described Ederson’s eye as ‘looking like a mess’ in the dressing room and tests have since revealed a small fracture.

Ortega, whose stunning late save to deny Heung-min Son may become the defining image of the title race, has been in superb form when called upon in 18 matches this season.

The German, who has aspirations of taking over as first choice, only has one year left on his contract and his future remains uncertain going into the summer.

City have so far failed to successfully negotiate a new deal with the 31-year-old, who would have started the all-Manchester FA Cup final at Wembley irrespective of Ederson’s fitness.

‘One on one he’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve seen in my life,’ Guardiola said after the Spurs match. ‘He’s so reliable. An incredible decision by our goalkeeping coach (Xabi Mancisidor) to bring him.

‘Ortega saves the action, otherwise Arsenal are champions – that is the reality. The margins are so tight.’
