Enzo Maresca has confirmed his decision on Chelsea’s main goalkeeper for the team’s forthcoming games on Thursday.
Previously, it was understood that the Portuguese manager was weighing up his conclusion regarding the shot-stopper position after Robert Sanchez’s multiple costly mistakes.
During January games, the Spaniard was slammed for his unconfident performance on target, mainly after he was at fault for Manchester City’s second goal in Chelsea’s 3-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Following the disappointing match against the Citizens, Maresca claimed that he still trusts Sanchez despite the team’s fans demanding a chance for newcomer Filip Jorgensen.
However, on Thursday, Maresca finally revealed his decision to put the Dane goalkeeper as an undisputed starter to allow the Spaniard to recover both mentally and physically.
He said: ‘I said that the Filip solution (against West Ham) was also to give Robert some time to recover mentally and physically.

‘But the idea is not to game-by-game change the keeper.
‘The idea is not to game by game change the keeper. In this moment, the last Premier League game against West Ham that we won was Filip… the FA Cup game was Robert, but our keeper in this moment is Filip.’
Chelsea are currently in fourth place in the Premier League table with 43 points, four points behind Nottingham Forest.
They had a good run during the first half of the season – with two points behind league leaders Liverpool in mid-December – but saw an abrupt drop in 2025.
Sanchez was highlighted several times among the fans for his crucial mistakes during Chelsea’s games, such as in the clash against Wolves when he dropped a cross from a corner to allow Matt Doherty to score a goal in the 45th minute at Stamford Bridge.
‘I spoke with Robert a few days before West Ham where I took the decision to play Filip. I never spoke again with Robert. Filip, exactly the same,’ added the Portuguese manager.
‘They know the situation. This is the situation now and then we will see.’
Jorgensen, 22, was signed from Spanish side Villarreal in the summer of 2024 for a fee of £20.7million.
He was seen as an ideal candidate for Maresca’s style of play, who was eager to add a new shot-stopper to his squad amid Kepa Arrizabalaga’s temporary departure to Bournemouth.
Jorgensen made three appearances and conceded four goals in the Premier League this season.
The Dane was the main goalkeeper in Chelsea’s path to the Conference League round of 16, featuring in all eight games of the group stage.
He is expected to add another league game against Brighton at the American Express Stadium on Friday night.
