Fans fume after VAR caused THREE-MINUTE delay to check if Everton goal was onside against Man United

Fans were outraged during Everton’s clash with Man United, after VAR caused over a three-minute delay following Beto’s opener against the Red Devils.

The goal appeared to be onside when looked at with the naked eye, but the VAR felt it necessary to take their time with the call.

Beto was onside when he was slotted through by Abdoulaye Doucoure to put the Toffees 1-0 up from close range.

However, following a corner moments earlier, the striker was in an offside position as he stood in front of Andre Onana.

The VAR were initially unsure whether Beto was blocking the United goalkeeper’s view, likely leading to the long delay.

However, many fans were in no mood to extend any leniency towards the VAR, and argued that the decision should have been wrapped up much earlier.

One fan wrote on X: ‘3 minutes to check a goal…. VAR not for me.’

Another wrote: ‘Not sure why VAR took so long to give what was a clear goal.’

A third asked: ‘Shocking defending, but why did it take VAR three minutes to rule on the goal?’

Shortly after, Beto played his part in Everton’s second goal, firing the ball into Jack Harrison from the right wing, whose shot looped up into the air and landed at Doucoure’s feet who tapped the ball in to double the lead.

No Premier League player has scored more goals than Beto in February 2025.
