Fans Rage at Everton Players after 4-0 Defeat

Footage has emerged of Everton’s squad receiving abuse from furious supporters following the club’s dismal 4-0 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday.

The Toffees have endured a dismal start to the Premier League season after being beaten 3-0 at home on the opening day against Brighton.

Sean Dyche’s side were then dismantled by Tottenham on Saturday, with a brace from Son Heung-min and goals from Yves Bissouma and Cristian Romero consigning Everton to another heavy defeat.

Everton are bottom of the Premier League following the heavy defeats, suggesting the club could face another season fighting against relegation.

Raging fans could be heard shouting ‘f*** off* at the Everton team as they made their way back to Merseyside by train on Saturday night.

Footage showed fans shouting abuse at Everton players, including England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Pickford had been at fault for Tottenham’s second goal on Saturday after he was caught in possession by Son, with the South Korean rolling into the empty net.

Defender Mason Holgate and forward Neal Maupay were among players to receive abuse from fans as they boarded the train at Euston station.

Both Holgate and Maupay were unused substitutes for the defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Maupay, who has become known for riling up opponents on the pitch, appeared to bite back at the supporters as he walked past.

The forward has since reacted to the footage on social media, writing ‘Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this. Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…’ 

Maupay, who has scored one goal in 32 appearances for the Toffees, has not played for the club competitively since last August after spending last season on loan at Brentford.

Everton’s woeful start to the campaign had led to bookmakers Paddy Power already paying out on the Toffees to be relegated from the top flight, just two weeks into the new season.

The Toffees were lining up with a depleted squad on Saturday, which included debutant Roman Dixon, 19, at right back.

Ashley Young was suspended, while Jarrad Branthwaite is injured and James Tarkowski was a fitness doubt going into the game.

The crisis-hit club survived despite points deductions last campaign, but have been unable to strengthen heavily over the summer as an ongoing takeover process drags on.

Dyche admitted the club were unlikely to have finances to add to the squad ahead of the transfer deadline on Friday, but said he was not accepting another battle against relegation. 

‘There’s no acceptance of anything,’ Dyche said on Saturday. ‘There’s a reality to all the challenges in football but that’s not acceptance.

‘It’s tough to come here to Spurs and it’s tougher with a thin squad. I don’t like making excuses but that’s a fact. Does that mean they win? No, it doesn’t because it doesn’t always work that way, but you have to make it not work that way.’

‘Until I’m told different there isn’t any finance to go and to go and change things. This is what we are.’

Everton are back in action on Tuesday in front of their own fans at Goodison Park for a Carabao Cup second round match against League One side Doncaster Rovers.

The Toffees then host Bournemouth on Saturday in their final Premier League match before the international break.
