A former Manchester United star has been handed a four-month suspended prison sentence after being pulled over for ‘dangerous driving’.

The incident occurred last August when the player went on holiday to Monaco and visited two nightclubs before deciding to get behind the wheel of his Rolls Royce.

He was stopped by the police in the early hours of the morning and breathalysed, returning a blood alcohol level of 1.01 per millilitre, which exceeded the accepted limit in Monaco.

Dutch footballer Memphis Depay was handed his sentence by a court in Monaco on Wednesday, and was given a four-month suspended sentence as well as a €9,000 (£7,500) fine and a two-year driving ban in Monaco.

The 30-year-old – who now plays for Corinthians in Brazil after being released by Atletico Madrid last summer – issued an apology on Instagram after the sentence was delivered.

‘I would like to apologise here,’ Depay wrote. ‘Last summer, during my vacation in Monaco, I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having a drink in a restaurant. I should have gotten into a taxi instead, but I didn’t.

‘That’s why I want to apologise and take full responsibility for my actions. 2024 was a year of lessons and I will definitely learn from this.

‘In 2025, we will do better.’

Depay is a familiar name to United fans after playing for the club between 2015 and 2017.

He was signed by Louis van Gaal just a year after the pair worked together to help the Netherlands finish third at the 2014 World Cup.

However, Depay’s stay in Manchester was a miserable one as he scored just seven goals in 53 appearances before departing after two years to join Lyon.

Despite his own issues, Depay did still win the FA Cup, Europa League and League Cup while at United.

He has since played for Barcelona and Atletico before leaving Spain behind to move to Brazil in September.

In 18 appearances for Corinthians across all competitions, Depay has scored seven goals.
