Gary Neville has revealed how Roy Keane refused to shake Mark Clattenburg’s hand during a frosty encounter between the two back in 2022.

Clattenburg has recently made headlines after Nottingham Forest – who he works as a referee consultant for – released a statement accusing VAR Stuart Attwell of showing favouritism towards Luton in the relegation battle.

The former official then doubled down on the club’s sentiments in his exclusive column for Mail Sport on Sunday, before Neville insisted Clattenburg ‘must resign’ from his role at Forest.

Now – during the latest episode of Stick to Football along with Neville, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher – Keane said to Neville: ‘He’s your mate Clattenburg! You were all over him at the World Cup’.

Neville then replied: ‘He’s opened up a can of worms now! So basically, we’re walking along this place in the World Cup, the three of us were having a chat and Mark Clattenburg walks towards us’.

Keane then quickly interjected, to the amusement of his co-hosts, and said: ‘But he was strutting, wasn’t he?’.

After they chuckled at the Irishman’s comment, Neville continued: ‘Right, he’s worked with us at the previous World Cups as our refereeing consultant, we trained with him and got to know him a bit.

‘So basically, we’re walking along and I’m like ‘Hi Mark, how are you?’ and then Wrighty goes ‘Mark, good to see you!’ and then he [Keane] hangs back a few yards.

‘And then he goes over to Roy to shake his hand and Roy goes [makes aggressive handshake motion]. No word of a lie!’

Jill Scott then turns to Keane to ask if he really did that, to which he turned and bluntly said: ‘Yeah!’

Neville continued: ‘He threw his hand away! And I’m like, ‘What’s going on here?! I know he’s a bit feisty but…’. You [Keane] carried on walking and we were left talking to him and I said, ‘Ref, is there a problem?’.

Explaining his hostility towards the former Premier League referee, Keane then responded: ‘He’d said something in a book after he worked with us’.

Wright, who was also par of the encounter, then said: ‘When we did finally catch him up, we said: ‘What happened there?’ and he said: ‘I don’t know. I think I remember him saying something’.

Elsewhere in the episode, Neville discussed Clattenburg’s role at Nottingham Forest and claimed his arrival has given the players ‘an excuse’ to lose games.

Forest, who were beaten 2-0 by fellow survival hopefuls Everton on Sunday, slammed ‘three extremely poor decisions’ in a furious statement after the match, claiming Attwell was a ‘Luton fan’ and that PGMOL were warned of this prior to the clash at Goodison Park.

Shortly after the match, Forest said: ‘Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept. We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.’

He said: ‘Since Mark Clattenburg has come in they’ve won one match in the last 10 games. The 10 games before that they won four in all competitions.

‘You never give football players or employees in any business a get-out or an excuse, ever. He has given them an excuse to not win.

‘It may sound really crazy but when you put that negativity drain in when you have your managers or players, like Neco Williams who came out on Sunday and is going to get in trouble, talking about referees and how everyone is against them – that strategy is not working.

‘What they need to do is switch their mentality completely and forget about referees. They need to get Clattenburg out of the director’s box and concentrate on football because they’re going to go down based upon this if they’re not careful’.
