Gary O’Neil unsure about Wolves future after poor performance

Gary O’Neil admitted that he has ‘no idea’ if he will be given the time at Wolves after his side lost 5-3 at Brentford to remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.

‘I have no idea,’ said O’Neil, when asked whether he was confident that he’d remain as Wolves boss, despite signing a four-year deal in the summer.

‘I am neither confident or not confident. Being a football manager means you have today and after that, so much can happen. Today I gave my best to help my football club have a successful day and it was miles below the standard we expect.

‘Tomorrow I will get up and do the same and at some point someone will tell me to stop and I will stop’, he added.

Wolves are winless in seven league games this season, conceding a league-high 21 goals already and O’Neil admitted that their display against Thomas Frank’s side was their worst since he was appointed head coach in August 2023.

‘There was no structure, a complete loss of control in terms of what the team are meant to do and be. It is the worst performance since I’ve been here,’ he said.

‘We were far too open with no real understanding and we gave ourselves no opportunity in the game at all because of the level of defensive shape and structure.  Even when we had the ball we were all over the place so defensive transitions caused a problem to us.

‘Yes, it’s a shock, I haven’t seen that from them much, I am shocked and it is really disappointing,’ O’Neil added.

The Wolves boss insisted the performance was that ‘disastrous’ that he will be forced to ‘rethink’ his system.

‘The responsibility lies with me and I look squarely at myself and look to give them something to follow and do better than today. The proof today was they couldn’t carry out what they needed to,’ he said.

‘There needs to be a rethink of how we go about things, maybe the understanding of the structure last season and in pre-season was good, maybe the extra midfielder and trying to move into something else has given us a problem.

During the game, sections of the travelling support chanted ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ at O’Neil and voiced their anger at the owners but the 41-year-old stressed that he is confident that he can turn their fortunes around.

‘I am confident I can help this group be competitive. Today was obviously disastrous but in the other games we were competitive mainly, so I am confident I can help them be competitive in every game and find a way to make the season successful,’ he said.

‘Winning is the only way to keep it together. I understand the nature of this job. It’s a tough job, while making a profit in the Premier League every summer.

‘It’s a tough job, not many clubs do that, it is the pressure of the job and I understand at some point fans and owners will ask me to leave the football club. That’s the way it goes. That doesn’t bother or faze me at all. I will give everything I can until the last second to leave the club in the best place possible.’
