Harry Kane calls for calm as England fans criticize Euro 2024 performance

Harry Kane has admitted he has not yet reached his top form for England after coming under fire for his first two Euro 2024 group stage displays – but he believes the Three Lions should not panic despite not ‘playing the way’ they wanted.

Kane scored England’s only goal in their limp 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday but was taken off in the second half and replaced by Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins in an underwhelming performance from one of the tournament favourites.

Having been criticised for dropping deep and failing to stretch defences, Kane conceded that he has failed to click into top gear but vowed more is to come.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, he said: ‘I try and stay away from it as much as possible but it’s impossible to not see some of the stuff nowadays.

‘Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion and when a major international tournament is on it’s going to be heightened.

‘If I’m being honest, am I playing as well as I can? No.

‘But I didn’t score in group at World Cup in the group stages, so I’m one ahead already now. I don’t get too high, or too low, I just go onto the next one.’

Despite the stuttering start, which also saw England edge to a 1-0 victory against Serbia, Kane is adamant Gareth Southgate’s side can take several positives.

‘Before the tournament, if you’d said, where we are now, that we would have pretty much qualified after two games, we would have taken it,’ he added.

‘We can be honest with ourselves that we haven’t played the way we wanted to play.

‘The good sign is that we’ve still picked up results while doing that.’

More to follow.
