Being a dutiful captain, James Tarkowski often volunteers for post-match media duties if Everton don’t win.

We’ve heard a lot from the experienced defender this season and again on Saturday after Sean Dyche’s men failed to break down 10-men Brentford and were booed off by a section of Goodison Park at the end.

Everton sit three points above the bottom three having not managed a goal in November and what’s concerning is December’s fixture list; a trip to Manchester United followed by a six-pointer against Wolves and then four big beasts in a row – Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea.

It sounds brutal which is why Tarkowski wants to assuage fears.

‘We are not playing any team more than another,’ he said. ‘We go to Old Trafford next week and the teams we have got coming up, we have picked up points against them before and I am confident we will do that again.

‘They are tough but you don’t get an easy game in this league where you are guaranteed three points. I go into every game in this league expecting to win, or at least compete,

‘Early season we scored quite a few goals and didn’t defend very well, and it has flipped on its head a little bit now.

‘All teams go through periods like this where they struggle to score. Sometimes it just takes one little scruffy goal to go in, and then you go on a little run.’

After a bright first half, Everton didn’t accelerate after Brentford captain Christian Norgaard was shown a red card via VAR in the 41st minute.

The visitors used a sense of injustice – Norgaard was going for the ball when he caught Jordan Pickford – to defend well for a first clean sheet this season.

‘The boys dug in,’ said defender Nathan Collins. ‘Nørgaard was gutted at half-time. We know how much he does for us, so that second half was for him.’
